Assuming(?) the contact used with my current Grant wheel will NOT work, then yes, I will need the hub and contact, spring, pin, etc. Hub is in good condition? PM a price if you have one in mind, thanks!

David the diameter of the 67 and 8 are the same. I put a 68 sprt wheel on my 67 GS conv non tilt and it fits fine, thanks Bill.

Played around with my wheel today, pulled off the Grant wheel to see what's underneath... here's a shot of the hub, what do you make of it? Doesn't look a lot like the pics posted above.

There was a black metal "cup" bolted over the hub, then an extension to move the Grant wheel out farther, as it's pretty flat. The wheel was bolted to the extension.

On the stock setup, what exactly are the 6 wheel screws threaded into? Not sure I see how the whole stock assy would go together. It appears I will need a 68 horn ring, maybe a correct hub still??? Confused though, my column is a 68 and this hub fits correctly. Do those 3 threaded holes look like they are drilled out and tapped larger than stock? There were 3 larger bolts threaded in there that bolted the Grant extension onto the hub.

Please explain, and excuse my ignorance. Is the black outer part of the hub actually part of the hub, or this a 2-piece deal, hub + black housing?
Also, how is the horn cap retained, what holds it in place?

Several GM models used the same simulated wood wheel as the 68 Buick, but what about the hubs? Would they have been different than ours, or might some of them interchange?

David, I imagine your car originally had the deluxe wheel. So lets look at that.

And the OER brand repo hub. You can see it matches up perfectly if I tightened the nut down. It came satin Black.

Here is the factory diagram for '68 wheels...

I was able to use a '69/up hub on my car before I found the correct '68 hub, I beleive the '69 hub left a gap but it did work OK for the short term (everything tightend up).

I am currently using a newer style horn contact (with the larger hole). David, the cap snaps into the spring loaded fingers on the horn contact.

I can also put a smaller diameter sport wheel on my '68 hub without a problem, I do this every fall so that I can store my simulated wood wheel and not worry about it cracking with the change in temperatures.

David- in case you were wondering... I lost the cap about three weeks ago. Today, I cleaned the basement and found it in one of the 'bill' bins. :spank: So, it is in the envelope and will go out tomorrow...:beer

Hey guys, thanks for all the input.

Scott, knew that hub likely had to go, just didn't quite know where it came from. Figured out it was a Grant adapter hub. I'll get it off some day this week maybe... :Do No:

Don, thanks for the pics, looks like my oem cancel cam is still behind the Grant hub. Their install instructions mention re-using the original.

Mike, thanks for the diagram, thought you might have that info. :TU:

George, no worries here, I've been out of town more than not the past couple weeks +, thought maybe I'd see it tomorrow when I get back to work. Should take a few days is all. Thanks! I've also got something to send you as well, but will hold off as I'm looking into something else too. :Brow:

No problem George, I'm off work again next week but will have them notify me when it shows so I can stop by. Thanks! :TU:

In that parts diagram, there is a somewhat larger spring that appears to either insert thru the cancel cam, or installs after the cam, I can't tell for sure. I have not seen such a spring while removing the Grant wheel and hub. The cancel cam is still on the column though, doesn't seem to want to come off very easily. Is there a trick to removal? Would I find that spring if I got the cancel cam off? It appears I have all the parts I need now, other than figuring out that spring. :Do No:

Davie, Spring goes around the shaft inside of the cancel cam. It should pull out easily. But it should be lubed up good. I would just leave it alone. Your contact spring goes down inside the cam tube. The instructions say to cut the pin down to 3/4 inch. On the '68 though not sure if you will need to or not, just test it out.

    Don,

The inst sheet actually says to leave the pin as-is for 67/68 with tilt sport wheel.

The cam tube on my column is over in about the 2 o'clock position, with my wheels straight ahead, while your pic shows it down around 5 o'clock. But the hub layout puts the tube over in the 10 o'clock position. I'm confused...

If you car was aligned. You want it back where you got it. The horn cap retainer will have an alignment mark on it. Nevermind where mine is.

Ok, I guess this will all shake out once I start in on installation this week.

Ok, I've got the 68 hub on and the wheel attached. Next up, the pin/spring/holder assy. So I slide the spring onto the pin, and put the little plastic holder on the end? Then insert the "holder" end of this assy into the cam tube? What does the plastic holder do, exactly? Then place the contact ring over the wheel and attach with 3 screws, while trying to keep the pin/spring assy in place? Sounds a bit tricky...

Do I have this step spelled out correctly, or do I have something mixed up?

Put the spring into the horn contact tube, then the large end of the pin then the retainer. Rotate retainer so locking nub is engaged in tube cutout for it. And yes it is tricky
