68 sport wheel swap

Here's the deal: My 68 had a nice Grant steering wheel when I bought it in 2001, w/tilt column. I'm at the beginning of swapping to a correct 68 16" sport wheel instead. Have the bare wheel now, that's all, and don't know when I'll dig into removing the Grant wheel. Had it off a few years ago, but don't recall much about what I saw.

My question is, with the Grant wheel already installed in place of what was likely a deluxe wheel originally, what other parts will be needed to go FROM the Grant wheel, to the 68 sport wheel? I still need a horn cap of course, but what about hub, contact, etc? Anyone know? Or will I just have to figure that out whenever I get the Grant wheel off? I'm just trying to plan ahead, it's not happening for a while. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to get the wheel restored, or use it as, with a few cracks. Restoration is expensive! :eek2:

David I would think you would need a hub and horn contact, and I know the hub and think the contact are 68 specific, not 69 and up. The horn contact needs to have the contact pin, spring and holder. Not sure I am using the correct words but I think I have a set that I could take a picture of. I do not have any extra for sale. Thanks Bill.

Bill, thanks for the info. Pics would be great if you get a chance. No rush, I'm heading out of town for the weekend.

Anyone else have any additional expertise?

David I should have all the parts you need. Let me know if you need anything. Btw you should try the epoxy repair yourself. And let me know how it turns out. I bet it would look pretty good. :beers2:

Any pics of the wheel you are using? I have a 68 that has a tilt column and I'm trying to find all of the parts for my wheel. Thanks

The '68 Sport wheel is simulated wood IE Plastic and 16". IIRC the '69 is the same as 70-72 15" comfort wheel. The '68 deluxe wheel is the more commonly seen 3 spoke plastic, same on '67 as well.

Isn't the hub - therefore the shaft a different size on the '68 vs the 69? Meaning that the wheels won't interchange.

I would also like to find a smaller sport wheel for my '68. At a reasonable price.

Tim, it's just a bare 68 simulated wood wheel, no other parts at this time. No hub, no horn cap, no contact. That's what I'm posting for, to find out what other specific items I'll need later on when I remove my Grant wheel. If you want to see pics, the For Sale ad where I bought it isn't very old.

Is there a specific repair kit you can recommend?

David here are the pictures of the wheel. The 68 hub is smaller in diameter and it is taller. The horn contacts look somewhat the same but the 68 cap will not fit on the 69 contact and I think the horn pin contact is longer on the 68. I do not have a extra to verify, I only have one on a car, my 68 GS 350 and I cannot get to it know to verify if the pin contact is longer. It would make sense because the 68 hub is taller and the contact tab on both horn contacts are the same depth. Thanks Bill.

Look at the last picture, the 68 horn contact has a smaller center hole, and the three plastic pins are closer to the center. The 68 cap has a larger lip and hits the plastic contacts on the 69 and that is why it does not allow the 68 cap to fit on a 69 horn ring.

Well... I will need all the 1968 pieces in Bill's pics above, except for the wheel, of course. You've got all these parts available?

David, I thought TPP had a hub, not sure about the contact. It may be he same as Olds 442 in 68 and Chev they used this type of wheel in 67/8 on some models. Thanks Bill.

Bill, TPP does list a hub, but there are no pics to see. And they call it "67/68"???

TPP also states the 68/69 horn caps will interchange. And horn contact is listed as 67-72...

I have every thing but a '68 horn button for you. I bought the hub on ebay. It is a OER brand . I'm not sure what one TPP sells. I guess you could ask them if they can tell you what brand part it is.
You need the contact and every thing else ?
