I have a pretty good condition center emblem. It needs the black re-painted but the chrome is in good shape. The problem comes along in that the Red of the first shield has faded to silver.

It "looks" like the center is a separate part, but rather than a nut holding it on, it seems to have been swaged over to hold it in position. Has anybody successfully removed this and re-colored the emblem? If so, how?

    Yeah, but I have a skylark, not a Cougar.:D

That was basically what I thought was in this one, I just wanted a little advice ahead.
Thanks for the link, now I'm off!

Looking at Testor paints, do you think I should use a Lacquer paint, or an enamel paint? It is for painting the back side of the clear plastic.

PS, it came apart really easy, just sand away a little of the swaged over area and tap the center with a punch. Popped right out.

Good to know, thanks for that.

Not sure what you call the paint, but I used the regular stuff that you put on the plastic model kits.
Did what you did on my 67 grille trishield, i.e. removing the backshield, clean it properly with, just manually, no abrasives. Painted it and sprayed some clear coat over it.
    Looks fantastic.
    Good luck

The real trick was actually drilling and tapping a #2-56 thread in the center of the posts of the center bezel. Then I loctited a stud in each one, assembled the whole thing and put a stainless 2-56 nylon locking nut behind it. I really should have taken a picture of that side too.
Maybe after the grille is done and assembled.

I also sanded off all the corrosion on the grille and re-painted it, then mounted it all together and it looks fantastic.
Now into bubble wrap and it gets to await the great assy.

I included the back of the center emblem showing the 2-56 nyloc nuts holding that thing together.
