The Cat had developed a weird no start issue. At first it acted like a bad starter solenoid. Turn the key and click. release / click until it finally would after 3-4 times catch and start. Couple of weeks ago it did it then nothing. Just lights on the dash and no sound of event trying to engage. Pulled the starter and bench tested it. Works, no issues. Replaced the solenoid just because I had one. tested again , works , OK! put assembly back in car. same issue even though the test light shows voltage getting to purple on the S terminal.
Week later. Chased the wiring back with a test probe running full 12V. starter engages every time I push through the purple up to the firewall. Pulled the switch out of the dash. Hit it at the back of the switch and good. Turn the switch with a screw driver ( tumbler is out) and it works. off n on several times and then it clicks. clicks. .... then nothing. Theres a resistor wire that the diagram says 10 ohm. Its getting hot. also bare in a few spots. Also shows signs of hot main feed into the back of the switch and a splice. After a few mins I try again and it starts 10 times in a row then nothing. Jump the main red(batt) to purple (sol) and its like a short. Few mins later jump it again and it starts. Its almost like theres a circuit breaker in line somewhere that the schematic does not show. I can turn the key on and from under the hood pick the purple wire at the firewall and presto, Starts right up.
The plan. as a back up I'll wire a fused 20A momentary switch into the wire feeding the S term. mount it on the floor left of the dimmer with a grommet through the carpet. When it decides to show its ass I can just step on the button \ start the car. I would however like to know what the real issue is. 54 yr old car and old high resistance wiring might be all that wrong.
