'66 Gran Sport posi into a '63 Riviera?

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by sergvillarreal, Apr 8, 2005.

  1. Just wondering if anyone know if a posi-traction unit (carrier, gears and all) from a '66 Buick Gran Sport with 3.42 gears will fit a '63 Buick Riviera? The posi unit is an Eaton p/n# ED-32121. The ring gear p/n# is 1382918. The pinion gear p/n# is 1375350. Anyone with a hollander interchange that covers these years.... I surely would appreciate it!! -Sergio

  2. Sorry for the obvious omission

the unit is from a '66 Buick Riviera GS with a 455. Thanks again! -Sergio

Even a 66 RIVIERA posi should not interchange with the earlier housing.
Yours should have a front drop out style rear end (no rear cover). Look for a posi from a 63 to 65 Riv or the 61-ish to 65 Electra or Wildcat. They were typically available in (among others) 3.07, 3.42, 3.90, 4.45 ratios. The bigger the numbers means the rarer they are and nobody reproduces them.

  4. Thanks Robert S.

You are absolutely correct... unfortunately. My quest for the holy grail of traction continues....

    Posi...

I know that the 63 Buick Fullsize will only work with the drop-out style 63/64 and maybe 65. BUT you cannot use a prior 63 posicarrier UNLESS you snag the axles too. My 62 has huge axles and the 63 uses skinnier axles. (less spline count too. Otherwise I would have used a posi I sold on ebay from a 64 Riviera on my 62. BTW, the 64 Posi carrier with 3:42 gears (just the pumpkin with posi and gears, no axles or housings) sold for $660 on Ebay about 6 months ago. I am in the neighborhood myself for a posi carrier so if you find one for a 62. I will keep my ears open for a 63-65 for ya.
