    Hi All,
I stripped three motors, ended up with two different PS pulley diameters. Noticed with big pulley, pump was barely in adjustment range. Went to smaller puller and cannot get the pump to rotate up, which will tighten belt and put bolts in middle of adjustment range slots.

Factory AC car, does that change the PS pulley dia.?
And why does the pump bind up when trying to adjust?
Is is common to grind the brackets a bit for better clearance?
    Any advice here?

    Thanx in advance!

they do bind up. just jerk it back and forward and lift up at same time

It is free. I can move it up and down about 1/4", then it gets stuck, all the mounting bolts move with just fingers.

It looks like the rear pressure fitting or front casting snout bind on the bracket.

Any idea on the pulley diameter?

I had a similar situation on my 65 Skylark GS. The car is not here at present. The pulley size was 5 1/4 or 5 3/4. I cannot remember exactly. When I got the car it had no power steering so I got a pump from a Wildcat. I did order the correct length of belt but just was able to get it on. I would suggest taking the belt to a supplier and getting one half an inch longer.
I did that and it worked great.

Remove the pump and look for dimples/burrs in the adjusting slots in the bracket. It is easy to make permanent deformation in the slots because the clamp bolts have limited bearing area, forcing the softer steel of the bracket into the slot. This happened on mine. I removed the dimple in the slot and end of problem...until the next time I change the belt. :(
