Hello , I have been checking out this forum for awhile. Decided to finally join as just I just picked up a farm fresh 65 sport wagon. It's pretty rough, but if I didn't pick it up when I did the farmer was going to crush it with a backhoe !!! and stuff it in the scrap bin! So it sits on my trailer. I do have to say this is one of the better collector forums I've joined . Tons of info and very well done.

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't decided wether or not it's restorable or not yet? It's had a large unknown animal living in it for years. The interior is red but very trashed . The dash is ok ,but it has the rubber floor matting. I know it has some floorboard rust. I will post some pics when I get a chance.

Dear Demolition man and V-8 Buick "long-roof" fans,

Sorry to hear that this wagon is so far gone. 50+ years a long time and clearly most of the cars you'll find these days have been abandoned to the elements. However, perhaps there is still hope. A friend of mine managed to get hold of a 1957 Bel Air that had been used as a dog house and ultimately he restored it to nearly showroom condition.

Please do post some pictures when you have a chance.

    Cheers, Edouard

    Welcome from Michigan!

Looks like that will buff out.:D

A gallon or 2 of POR-15 sprayed on, 3 or 5 coats of sand able primer on top, sand smooth, sealer and paint and brand new used! Just wire brush the thick rust flakes off and ready for POR. Don't use POR on sand blasted metal, it won't bond very good and can come off in sheets. It is designed to chemically bond to rust and convert it so it stops rusting. It needs a top coat over it because it isn't UV resistant.

Looks mostly like surface rust which is very manageable, with the lower looking really good which is hinting that the frame and floors are probably solid.

Here in Michigan they rust from the bottom up(frame, floors, trunk, lower fenders and lower quarters), from the top down doesn't look as bad, to me anyway. WAY less bending over or squatting while working on it anyway, my body doesn't like those positions so much anymore at my age.

If you don't like the POR-15(paint over rust) idea, look into airless blasting, they can have that whole car stripped in no time with minimal warping, maybe you can even rent one of those airless blasters to help keep cost down? Just make sure if you go the airless blaster way that the metal is still thick enough to handle the process without ending up with Swiss cheese? GL

The upper roof section , tailgate, fenders and 1/4 panels are actually in good cond. The door bottoms have bubbles. The floorboards are very very rusty from the rubber floor matting. The dash panel is good but the rest of the interior is very trashed . IDK about the motor and trans yet. It's complete. I most likely wont do anything with wagon but I would not have slept well letting the farmer put the backhoe bucket through that way cool roof. I will probably list the wagon in the part out section:cool: Im going back to the farmers tommarow to save a 71 AMC hornet with a factory 304.
