I would like to replace the driver's side lower door hinge. Are all replacements from the same manufacturer? Is this something I can easily do? Any help would be appreciated.
You will need an "S" wrench or have a tool fabricated (heat and bend, or cut and weld a box end wrench or socket) If you study the bolts and try getting a wrench on the heads, you will see what I mean. I know a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I had a wrench fabrication drawing that I cut out of a car magazine that had the degree and bend data that I used (after boogering up the hinges trying to put bushings in with the hinges installed.) Not sure if anyone has that information of the tool to do it. (a lot of repair shops used to have that stuff before the far east invaded) The angle and offset make it almost impossible to remove the hinge mount bolts unless you have small hands, or prep your hands by running a cheese grater over them for a few weeks, and smashing them with a vise a few times and you might be able to get it with regular wrenches. As long as you only do one hinge, leave the other in place, and make sure you support the door during the process, you should be OK. There are aftermarket hinges available, but I pulled and sent mine off to be rebuilt since other than bushings being worn, they were in great shape.
Thank you both so much for responding as I haven't been an active member. I wasn't very clear on my message. My drivers side hinge is broken off on the top where the 'roller' goes. I have no spring. If someone rebuilds them I'm all ears. Ron
All GM 64-65 A cars, and El Camino too, use the same door hinges (front doors). There is a 65 Le Mans door in local yard that has hinges, but unsure of actual condition. Believe these hinges are cast aluminum as I recall.
To continue this thread and hopefully not highjack it. Every resto parts supplier -Ames, OPGI etc offer new replacement upper and lower door hinges. Are they all from the same supplier or are there differences?
