I've been having some problems with my `65 starting when it get's up to operating temperature but it always starts when it's cold. I finally tracked it to the ignition switch. I took it apart and found some burned terminals, one burned all the way through the contact plate. Every now and then I see someone post a wanted ad for one but I ordered a new one through Carquest and just wanted to let everyone know they are still available. In fact, I ordered two of them so I'd have a spare if I ever needed it. The Carquest part number is: 53-27602 if anyone needs one. My wife works there so I got the employee discount, which was $14.77. Just thought I'd pass it on.

    Hey Golden,

The ignition switch I received from RockAuto for my '64 did not fit- the key indexing was all wrong- the key would not even come close to lining up with the bezel markings.... also, the spade connectors on the back where not in the same exact places, so I could not use my original wiring harness connector on the back of it.

Did the new switch from Carquest allow you to use the original plastic cover on the back (did it come with the 3 square holes on the perimeter where the plastic wire carrier snaps in?), or did you have to separate the wires from the original plastic carrier to use the new switch?

See photo- new switch is on the right:confused:

I need to replace mine- it will hardly turn anymore, due to damage in the switching portion of it.

Glad I read your post- my switch had been arcing on the back where the BATT wire connects (and melting the harness connector), due to a poor, corroded connection!!!:beer

    Thanks,

    David

    David,
My problems go all the way back to when I first bought the car. It kept shutting off but would always start right back up. One day while I was driving it and it quit. I reached for the key and as soon as I touched it it came back to life so realized it was the switch itself. I pulled it and found the connector on the back all melted. I got a new switch but for the time being I just cut the plastic off and plugged in the terminals separately. One thing I never liked about the new switch was the lock cylinder was different and it used the later model square key. Later I got a new connector and fixed the melted part, then bought a used switch that used the original key and put that in. The connector in the back is the same for both switches. Well, lately I've had trouble with the switch again so I took it apart and found it was fried inside so I asked at Carquest about a new one. Yup, they could get me one so I ordered two so I'd have a spare, and guess what, I now have the same problem as you have with the terminals being different. So, assuming that these switches are for different years I asked Brian for a connector for a `65. He had one so I bought if for $15 shipped and it doesn't fit. Now I have even more money in somethng I can't use but at least the new switches I have fit my original lock cylinder, which I am happy about. So your guess is as good a mine :Do No: Sorry about the misinformation, I guess I spoke too soon, although the switch does fit. Also sorry for the long post but now I hope someone reads this who can shed more light on it for us both. Why are these replacement switches different? And what can we do about getting the correct plug for the back?

Yeah, I don't mind pulling all the wires out of the plastic connector, if it will give me a spanking new ignition switch to use, but I cannot live with the key going into the cylinder nearly 90 degrees off from what the bezel says....

I wish I could find a good switch lubricant here on the island to use- maybe that would take care of my problem for a little while...

I'd love to hear from anyone who has found a source for a good , new replacement ignition switch for a '64

Hummm..... Mine isn't like that. It fits the original lock cylinder in the correct position and works the way it should, just has a different connector in the back.
