I am looking for dual quads for my 65 401 engine, can anyone tell me what the letters S , Sa and SB stand for after the carter carb number.
    Example 3645SB
    Thanks

I just put Dual Quads on my 401 this past Winter. I haven't taken it out yet tho. Still Salt dust on the roads. I used Two 600 Edelbrocks and a stock Big pie pan air cleaner with the dual snorkels. They're not supposed to fit but with a little bit of ingenuity it fits like a glove. The filter element is from a 427 Ford galaxy with the Dual quad set-up. You just have to cut it down a bit. This way you don't have to hunt down the correct carbs. That is unless you are doing a numbers matching car.

    Al,
Most all Carter carburetors have an "S" at the end.
    Example 6320S
If a change was made to a carb they noted the change by adding an "A" after the "S"
    Example 6320SA
If another change was made it would change to "B"
    Example 6320SB

Thanks Rhett. I had the Intake and figured I might as well use it.

Thanks Greg, The set of carbs I am looking at are numbered 3645SB (ck4) & 3925SA (AK4) I assume and I should not assume anything these would be compatible (SA - SB) and would these be considered matching numbers? Trying to figure out all the technicalities.
    Appreciate your response Al T.

Nice work Jim and I may have to go this route if this deal does not go right. Like the peek-a-boo filter effect. How or where did you come by the linkage ? Thanks Al T.

I actually set my Q-Jet air cleaner up kinda the same way by having the air filter sit on a ring of 3/8" hose.. Gives a 1/2 " gap between the lid and base, allows more air intake than the single snorkel can provide and more clearance for airflow between the lid and air horn, which is pretty tight on a nailhead pancake aircleaner. And a lot prettier than flipping the lid like a high school kid...

Hi Al. I just ordered the Progressive Linkage from Summit. It's maybe 60-70 Bux. As far as the Air Filter, that's the way it came. I had to cut 2 1/4" out of the circumference to get it to drop in. It comes that tall. I got It from Summit too. If you want to know more details let me know. I had a Q Jet on it but I went with the Dual Quads to see if it made any difference. But I put a small TA Cam in it while I had it apart. I figured, What the hell, Might as Well.

Rhett, Good Point. I have more clearance with this Air Cleaner than I did with my QJ A/C. Even with those 1/2" carb spacers on there.

Thanks Jim. I'm having a hard time getting it to idle below 1100. Then I hear a big Clack. I think I broke a rocker arm. I put a TA 25 cam in it. I left the stock springs in it to break in the cam. I checked the coils at the peak of travel and there was plenty of room so I thought I'd be safe. Maybe not. I got so pissed I haven't checked yet. So it's sitting. I'll pull a valve cover off today and see what the damage is. If a rocker is broken I have a 425 sitting around and I'll take the rockers off of it and put them in. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky. If I do, I'll still have to figure out my idle situation. Oh The Joy.

The correct air filter for the dual quad air cleaner is virtually identical to those used on the 61-63 dual quad 409 engines. Used to have the PN, but can't find it now. And the spare ones I did have just left with my car earlier today.:Dou:
