Hey everyone, I'm doing a full restore of a 64 Riviera numbers matching dual quads.

The whole car is going to be pretty much original except for lowered suspension, exhaust and custom wheels.

It's in for body and paint now and I can't decision on a colour. Original was Diplomat blue and was repainted black. I want the car to look badass, something you would see driving around Gotham City. So, I was leaning towards black with maybe a bit of blue metallic to match the interior.

Or, is it better to go back to the original colour? Does this make it more collectable / desirable? It's actually a nice colour just don't know if it's badass enough.

Deep rich pearl burgundy like on the Lexus LS430's or darck cherry would look classy and aggressive at the same time while really fitting the body style

That would look nice. I think I am restricted though with an all dark blue interior

My Dad's '64 Riv is very close to the Diplomat Blue, maybe just a shade lighter and I thought it looked great on his car with a white interior. That being said we are painting it in Black Cherry this spring/summer. I think your idea of black with some blue in it would look awesome with the dark blue interior. Dark colors look real nice on these cars with all the chrome and stainless trim.

My daughter-in-law has a 2008 Honda Accord that looks black until the sun hits it, then there's lots of deep blue metallic showing. I don't know the name of the color, but it might be worth a bit of research based on what you've said you were looking for.

If your interior is blue and staying that way I think it will look better with diplomat blue than with black. If you are replacing the interior, the contrast of diplomat blue with a white interior as in your pictures is hard to beat!

The diplomat Blue looks great. You could keep it kinda original but add a custom touch by mixing in some pearl to make it pop.

Nighthawk black pearl, sprayed probably 15gallons of the stuff over the years, very popular color nh731p and B92p iirc

I say dark blue with a hint of flake or pearl. Navy is a strong sinister color if done right. Sometimes I like it more than black.

I like red, dark cherry or similar, but not with your interior. I've had 2 nighthawk Black pearl cars, like it a lot and maybe the best choice. Personally I like a dark exterior with a lighter interior unless triple dark almost matching throughout. Stance and wheels will accentuate.

    Good luck with the project.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

I'd go with the original blue. Car is somewhat rare and, if the time comes to sell, you'll get more $$$. And I like blue anyway. BTW, they did put blue guts with black paint from the factory, at least in '62.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have another couple of weeks to decide but think I may go with the original blue with metallic in it. Im Sure in will look nice!

OK F-81: GM dark blue those years was yummy...especially with fresh white leather in a 63 Riv. I like the burgundy and when I changed color I went with the similar shade burgundy...with NO metallic. Dark blue will almost be black with no metallic. It's much more work blocking and color sanding but the results might be sensational. Mitch

That original blue is beautiful. A little pearl or metallic flake will go a long way if it has to be custom. I have a Challenger in a similar color with a metallic coat and it gets lots of compliments. At night it looks black, in the sun its a really nice blue.

With those wheels, I'd say to go black if you want sinister. I like them and they're a great choice, but anything else will make a "pretty" car out of it. Black will make it look like a gangster car, and that's what I'd do.
