$500 ‘64 Wildcat, is it worth it???

$500, no title, rusty, rusty, rusty. Buckets and console, non-tilt, cornering lights, original wheels. Console is not great but shifter and linkages appear to be there. Buckets look like saveable cores. Front bumper is not bad and real straight. Motor is likely locked up but complete. Trying to talk myself out of it. Any thoughts? Also, did the early cars with drop out center sections use a “posi” tag. If I could determine it has a posi I would probably just buy it.

 

Isn’t a car worth about $250 in scrap right now? Seems like you could get scrap price after stripping out some of the cool parts.

 

How much space and time do you have? I pass stuff like this up all the time because I've done it a few times, and the car always ends up just sitting looking not good in my yard for months or years. If you and your neighbors don't mind looking at it while you part it out, for sure it's worth it.

 

Better yet see if you can offer him $200 and you take the parts off it you want? Leave him with the husk. Those wheels are worth money. They may even have center caps on them (rare and 1 year only). That's what I would snag. The car itself would cost trillions of dollars more than its worth (unless it's a 4-speed and even then millions more). I do like the color though. That's desirable... sad it ended up in that place. At one time that was a serious head turner.

 

I know the wheels were a one year only but they are slightly rusted and would need rechromed. Center caps are long gone. Are they still worth anything needing rechromed? They seem straight and there are 5 of them.

 

It the Bucket seats are salvageable being the frames and tracks can be sandblasted and saved they are worth 400 on up Id say.
They wont fit A bodys but will fit all GM large cars so Impala guys might buy them.
Like Lucas said if you have time and space and no title not a issue.
If it was local to me Id probably go for it.

 

On the early Full Size cars one of the easy ways to check for a posi is to look at the fill/check level plug. If it takes the end of a 3/8ths. extension it's NOT posi. If it takes a 3/4" open end wrench to remove the plug & it's square in shape then it's more than likely posi. Unless of course someone swapped it out.

Brian, NO TITLE . How are you going to get rid of the carcass once you strip it?I don't know how it is in Omaha but here in Ohio nobody will take it without one. So that means cutting it up in pieces and getting rid of it little by little. More time involved. Just something to think about. Tom

 

I can get rid of the shell, the title is not really an issue. Not expecting to make a bunch of money or anything. I have some space for it and would just strip it down as quick as possible. I may try to jack it up and check the rear differential out later this week.

Last car I parted I paid more than that for (63 Skylark Hdtp). I have more than doubled my investment in some parts I sold. I stashed away probably close to $2000 worth of parts for my own personal use. I swapped some parts for other parts I need and I still have some parts to sell yet lol!

Now thats a win win deal there!

I paid $200 for a set of 4 of those wheels all needing re chrome and thought I got the bargain of the year. Mind you, I got the center caps as well ......

 

I agree with Jason. The engine is worth a couple of hundred dollars as a core, The wheels and other parts are almost certainly worth more then $300. I'm not sure where you are, but I would buy a complete Nailhead THM 400 transmission core.
