The gears should never touch the side of the pump housing. Never.

Run it with no oil, you might put some score marks on the gears and on the ends of the housing, but since the gears don't touch the sides, the sides will be fine.

That housing has a bigass gouge in it, from where debris got caught in the gear teeth and was carried part-way around just before the drive overloaded and sheared the tangs off the top of the shaft.

I believe I found your issue.
Looking at your pics of the timing cover, I don’t see the 1/8” holes for the dowel pins to properly locate your spacer for the longer gears. Without the dowel pins to hold and locate the spacer plate the plate CAN AND WILL MOVE, and when it does, the gear/s will grind right into it.

No spacer used. I'm standing by "debris".

Is it possible that when the dizzy was reinstalled after priming it wasn't down all the way over the pump gear slot, when you started it, it spun the pump some because of the pressure down. Those same forces could have flexed the pump and caused the top shear off eventually??????

Looks like hes running the longer gears in the pic, unless the drive gear just slid down a bit and gives the illusion of a longer gearo_O

I thought that was part of the issue with the Proform covers,..that the gear pocket on some of them weren't located correctly? That's why Bobb got Finishline inspected and checked that ver area, if that idler pin isn't position 100% true or center to the bore than you're gonna issues guaranteed.same goes for the drive tunnel obviously.

The only issue I have with debris is there would have been oil after 20 seconds of running debris or not,..some oil would have made the trip also, the op said it was bone dry and certainly looks as if that was true

Had oil when priming, had oil for ~20 seconds. Then the teeth locked, the drive sheared, etc.

For what it’s worth, I believe Shirley is correct. The gears mesh quite closely and even a very small piece of debris will jam them and cause the damage shown.

    Shirley you jest...
I hate that automatic spell correct "feature". I make enough mistakes on my own; I don't need any help.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm a charter member of the local affiliate of the National Association of Funny Names Clubs.
