A long time ago I sent in my distributor from a 1972 455 to get rebuilt and curved to the Kenne Bell cam I installed. It was a very well known company at the time in mpls called Smith Auto. I got the distributor back and installed it. I did a frame off and decided to do some engine changes and installed a MSD dist. Just for fun I checked the numbers on the distributor and if I did not make a mistake on this that dist number states it is a 350 distributor. Did they install a 455 gear on a 350 distributor? This distributor only has 5,000 miles on it and I was looking to sell it. I feel that I was ripped off and that I most likely got a 350 rebuild instead of the distributor I gave them to work on. What is this distributor worth? Do I pull off that gear and put one on for the 350? That way it fits what the number says it fits. Sorry I cant give you the number right now the distributor is in storage with the car. Suggestions on what to do. Thanks, Rick Kennedy
Neither 350 or 455 are worth much unless it's a stage 1 distributor, they may have used the 350 distributor to achieve the curve they felt like it needed, they may have used the 350 body because yours was damaged in some way,...or maybe the just lost it and replaced it,..I'd just advertise it as what it is and in life a 350 gear to go with it and let the new buyer take it from there,..if it were mine I'd price it at $50 if its points and $75 if its electronic
Here's the 1972 Distributor specs. Not much difference between the two. And yes, you can run the distributor in either engine with a simple gear change.
The aluminum bodies are all the same as Larry stated. It’s the man with the stamp that made them valuable. I have seen fakes.
