430 stock fluids/filters

    Piecing together everying to get my 430 runing to find out the condition and do a compression test.

    Please tell me the recommended oil filter, oil weight, spark plugs/wire, timing you use or recommend. Or tips. Thanks

    for timing I'd make a read or two or more if needed through the wizard timing thread.
    I like a wix oil filter. 51258
    I bought some "less expensive" plug wires. They are standard brand. And ngk plugs. I used to buy autolite and ac but it seems neither are decent any more. I'll look into the part numbers.
    as far as compression testing you will need a gauge or borrow one. Also if you have an Air compressor or can get access to one a leakdown test on each cylinder can give clues as to the condition. Dry then with some oil in cylinder.

    Oil filter? Anything but Fram. The Wix filters are great. Oil weight? I'd start with 10W/40. Get an oil pressure gauge on the engine and see what the hot pressures are.

    Spark plugs, NGK UR-4 is hard to beat. Wires, Rockauto has lots, pick a set.

    Timing, set the total timing to 32* and go from there. The initial timing will be whatever it needs to be. It will depend on what distributor is currently installed in the motor. Don't tell me it is stock until you look at the part number. The stock 430 in 1969 had a 1111335 distributor. I'd be surprised if it is still there.

    Distributor on the engine is 1111260 7C17. Your right Larry not the original, I wonder what it is?

    I'll be needing bolts, for example I'll need the bolts that connect the engine and trans, starter bolts, flexplate bolts, exhaust manifold bolts, and possibly more bolts.

    I was thinking of getting them off a donor 455 engine from a Junkyard when ever one shows up. What are my other options, I ran across a guy months ago who tried to sell me flexplate bolts for 25$ used, I thouht that was too much. What do you think?

    Don't cheap out on the flex plate bolts! Get ARP replacements and get the ARP torque converter bolts while you're ordering the others.

    Make a list of stuff like that you can buy from Summit so when you reach over $100 shipping will be free.

    Don't have a listing on that one.

    Regular hardware store bolts are OK for the engine to transmission and exhaust. Starter bolts you can get in the "Help" section of any Auto Parts store.

    If you already had those bolts and the flex plate was bolted there from the factory I would say use what you have.

    Seeing how you don't have those bolts, buying them from some random guy selling those bolts you won't know the history of them. Why were they removed is the $69,000 question, you don't know. Why risk buying someone's junk on very important fasteners?(you probably shouldn't take that gamble, I wouldn't)

    You can take that kind of gamble with non-moving part fasteners like oil pan bolts or valve cover bolts that type of fastener wouldn't matter, oil would just leak if they failed(but the rarely fail because they're low torque fasteners).

    On the other hand if used flex plate bolts failed it could cause damage to the crank and leave you stranded.(ask me how I know:rolleyes:)

    You don't necessarily need to get the ARP bolts, but the proper new replacement type bolts would be a good idea. IIRC, TCI sells torque converter bolts that I have used successfully before. Try to stay away from the China fasteners though, better off with the used!:eek:

    Are all coils created equally? Avan-tech, standard motor products, ngk, delco, world power systems, United.....
    How do I test a coil at home?

    So any hardware grade8 bolts are fine for the bellhousing? What's the bolt size and length?
