Ken, It might be beneficial to run some GM top engine cleaner to get the carbon out of the combustion chamber. That may help with the ping. There is no chance that engine is gonna be happy with 87 octane. Get used to pump premium. BTW, you really won't get your lowest idle oil pressure until you drive it on the highway for about 30 minutes or more. That will get your oil up to maximum temperature.
current timing 19 initial 14 mechanical 8 vacuum mechanical in by 2200 operating temp 180, no overheating issues.
this is a good idea. I will do this. I cleaned up a little with a wirebrush before the regasket job, but I am sure there is a bit left.
Ive been backing down the timing and I am at about 30 degrees (16 initial, 14 mechanical in by 2000) Vacuum disconnected. Pinging almost gone. I need to drive it hard some more. I think my vac modulator is bad too on the trans. I need some time with the car. uninterrupted time is hard to come by lately. phah at least Ive been driving it.
well if it blows the modulator you will fill the engine will tranny fluid, effectively cleaning all the carbon buildup out of the motor :Brow:
Still running strong. Plans change though and I think I am going to have to sell this to free up cash for turbos etc. Check out the thread in the parts for sale section
Yes the car and motor are long gone. I heard the car was gold then a chevy burnt orange and haunting the bristol area. Last I saw it was on CL maybe three four years ago.
The cracking issue was only in 1967 on the big-port heads. Later heads from 68/69 were thicker castings and less prone.
