Hey Yall, I just took possetion of a 64 riv with a 425. I know they didn't come with 425's but this motor was put in it after the original blew up. I can't find out anything about this 425. The block casting number is "1864704" the "8" may be a "3' The heads have a casting #1196914 Any help would be appretiated
Oh yes they did. :Brow: Check for the code stamped on the top of the block in front of the lifter valley cover. Those will help tell you what it is and what it came out of. There is more info on them and what they mean here; http://www.buicks.net/shop/engine_ident.html
Seems like that head casting number was used on both of the big nailheads 401/425 for more that just a single year, as I remember a discussion on the Yahoo BuickNailHead list. The 425 was the standard engine for the Riv for 64. I've got the matching numbers block in my 64, with that same casting number on both heads. Congrats on getting a 64, you'll like it once you've got a little bit of work into it.
The only way to identify for sure is to use the stamped code at the front of the valley pan. The casting numbers were used for several years (especially on those heads). Have fun with your Riviera, i had a 64 and now have my 63. Stock 64 is much better as it has the super turbine 400 instead of the infamous dynaslow like 63 had. My 63 has a switch pitch 400, a dynaslow is not worth even trying to use. Riviera's are great cars. Here is a picture of my old 64, which had a 401 instead of the 425. It also had the 65 front end with the hidden headlights, it was lowered 4 inches. My wife still wishes I had that car, but it needed a lot of owrk on the interior and I just had too many projects at the time.
