    This is all getting very interesting. I just came from where my parts car is parked and took these pictures of the casting numbers and the stamped number at the front of the engine. I get back to my place and check for new posts and find a link to some new information saying that red nailheads are almost always 425's and the 1364705 is possibly a 425 number. I always thought someone just painted it red. So, not only do I find out that I have a 2bbl engine in my race Wildcat, but now find out I might own a 425. I guess I need to go back and check for that rectangle at the back of the block.

    Thanks Ed for that link!

    p.s. I couldn't upload the picture of the front number (AARRRGGG!!!! is this happening to anyone else?) so here it is 385691109

    Assuming 385691109 is the stamped engine serial number:

    38 = 401 V8
    5 = 1965
    691109 = sequential number starting a 690001 for 401 V8 in 1965

    So it is just a 401. Thanks for decoding the serial #.

    Hi all, I am looking at the stampings on the passenger and driver sides, but the numbers are all smudged up and sort of erased, so I can't identify what the heck is going on there. I am going by Mortec's casting numbers list. Could I try to take a picture and post it here perhaps? It's dark now, but I can try tomorrow morning.

    Hi Corvette Andy

    Im guessing you are looking at head casting numbers ? if they are on both sides. Block casting numbers are on the bell housing area and serial / year code stamped in front of the valley pan. I think the earlier small engines 264 / 322 had numbers stamped along the drivers side of the block on a machined surface.
