The engine would not run at all if your spark was not occurring on the compression stroke. As long as it is running, then check for a slipped balancer. You'll need a piston stop. You can make one out of an old sparkplug and a 3/8-16 bolt. Knock the porcelain out of the plug and tap the shell for the bolt. I believe I used a 3 or 4" bolt. It looks like this,

    PistonStop.jpg

Put the piston stop in place of the #1 spark plug. Turn the engine one way until the piston hits the stop. Make a mark on the balancer in line with the zero on the timing tab. Turn the engine back the other way until the piston again hits the stop. Make another mark. True TDC is exactly halfway between the 2 marks.

If you do in fact have the 1111335 distributor, it has between 30 and 34* of mechanical advance. If your initial timing is 20*, it means your total WOT timing will be 30 + 20 =50* or as much as 34 +20* = 54*. Moving the initial timing back to 16* will not fix things. You will still have between 46 and 50* of timing at WOT. Way too much.

ok. I will try and make something up like that thank you for the picture that does help me get an idea of how to make it. Also to clarify I’m doing this correctly. From standing at the front facing the engine turning the distributor clockwise retards or brings down the timing correct. (NOW IM CONFUSED I THINK IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND). And counter clockwise would advance again if you were standing at the front bumper and facing the engine.
Also my big 3 issues I been dealing with which 1st I been working on is timing.
2nd overheating which I know timing and vacuum advance can play a part but I was told that that my fan should be more then an inch away from the radiator and about an inch of blade should be sticking out the shroud???
#3 probably is a combo of 1&2. I get hot starts. I come back to the car 20 minutes after driving it for awhile and it has a hard time starting.

Btw. When it’s cool out meaning Wisconsin 60-70 temps my car stays 180 all day. I start getting into the hot season 80 degree temperatures the car starts to over heat.

Greatscat. I’ve waited and had this issue for way to long to just go to anybody so if I can’t figure it out by the end of the summer I’m more then willing to figure out a way to get my car to you as long as there is no snow come fall. If you could take on the tuning issue and do the oil modification

Yes, standing in front of the car, or any place for that matter, clockwise retards the timing, counter clockwise advances the timing.

Normally, advanced timing cools the engine down, but if it is VERY advanced, that could cause detonation and overheating. It sounds like you are running at least 50* of timing without the vacuum advance, so you need to straighten that out.

Thank you Larry. I’m going to keep at it as time allows me to

For oiling I would just drop pan and put a 5/8 pickup on it and chamfer the hole some. Definite improvement over 1/2in pickup.....
