From the looks of the pics that speedometer has the factory cutout on the bottom side for the automatic gear indicator... P R N D L 1 2. So... How is that a 4 Speed speedo?

It's totally original, I don't think GM made two separate speedometers, they probably painted the face without the PRNDL & left out the orange selector on the 4 speed cars.

JDB, Do you have a pic of the front side of the four speed speedometer? I'll bet the bottom of the face is cut out for the automatic selector.

They are different speedometers, as the pictures show. I went through this already when looking for a 4 speed speedo a while back. The cutout is wrong for stick cars.

Andrew, Did you look at the pics I posted?

    Yes I did.

I remember when i was searching for one on ebay over a year ago and I found a NOS one. It did not have the slot cut out on the face nor the housing. I didn't buy it because they guy wanted like $300 for it, thats not gonna happen.

    Andrew,

You can't compare NOS replacement parts to original parts to determine if an original part is correct - this has been discussed several times by the concours judges. There were changes in parts after the cars were produced, and the NOS parts often times were slightly different (like the 70 GS grilles, radiator caps, etc.).

The speedometer/face on the ebay speedo looks just like the one on my 83,000 mile documented/original 4 speed Stage 1. Take a look at the picture below and it clearly shows the cut out in the bottom of the face.

Maybe JDB can also post a picture showing the face of his speddo since you probably won't believe it coming from me.

I wonder if maybe in 71 or 72 they started making the speedo's without the cut out in the bottom of the face? Maybe someone can check there 71/72 4 speed car to see if that is the case?

    Frank,

I sold the 4-speed speedo in that photo and did not save any of the front side. I did find this photo of a 1970-72 NOS 4-speed speedo that was on E-bay.

So that looks like another one with the bottom of the face cut out.

James W. : If you look at yours the face has the cut out but I dont think (looking at the photo) that the bottom (the metal case) has the cut out. In order to know for sure if yours does or not you would have to look under the dash to be sure. look at the case part not the face.

gobuick : I have taken out 3 1972 4spd speedo's and none have had the cut out

My opinion is that the 4spd speedo's have a different case the internals might be the same but the case is not.

This is how we all learn about our cars we talk it over to find out what is and what is not correct :TU:

Hey Ryan! How's it going? Your right, my case does not have the cut out, but neither does the one Frank was selling. They both have a cut out on the bottom of the face, as does the NOS one that JDB posted a picture of.

My point to Andrew was based on his post that the one he saw on ebay did not have the cut out on the face, therefor he may have felt the one Frank was selling may not have been original.

I agree, this is how we learn. Duane has told me and other board members several stories of how some concours cars had deductions for parts that were NOS (like the drivers side fender well on a 70 car that went thru a design change for the cruise control pad in 71 and up, but not correct for a 70). The car owners don't like hearing it since they pay top dollar for NOS parts only to get deductions, and that's why I mentioned it.

As a matter of fact, there have been some parts reproduced based off of an NOS part, only to find out that it is not correct and subject to a deduction (the judges will often times be lenient if it is the only thing available, but a little research by the manufacturer may have prevented the inaccuracies).

I realize most people don't give a crap about the concours class, or agree with the extremes of what is considered "correct", but for some, it is important to make their car as original as it can be. :TU:

I think your right on that James. :Smarty:

The one you are talking about on ebay has absolutely nothing to do at all with the research I have done in the past. Just stating what I have seen. Having that said it is so lovely for you to drop bye and say hi again!!! Nice to hear from you Mr. Weinman.:TU:

    Hey Phil,

How's your car coming along? Are you going to Columbus? When you get time, can you post a pic of your speedometer? Thanks!
