All of my Buicks are out of storage and every one of them needs an oil change - a 215 aluminum small block, 364 and 401 Nailhead, and 400 Big Block. What's the latest thinking on oil, viscosity and additives? Can I use the same oil in all of these different engines? what about Zinc additive? Do I need that?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Over the past 25 years, I have had great results with diesel oil. I like the 10w-30 weight in any of the major brands: Rotella, Delo, etc.

I also add in 1/4 oz. of Cam Shield per quart.

Diesel oil is inexpensive, and does a great job of protecting and keeping the engine clean.

$12 a quart plus shipping versus less than $4 quart sourced locally.

Do you believe that the Gibbs oil is at least 3X better than the diesel oil?

Or, another way to look at it is you can perform 3 oil changes for the price of one.

BTW - I am a huge fan of Baldwin oil filters.

I believe diesel oil was formulated for diesels:grin: Diesels are low RPM engines that are inherently dirtier than gasoline engines. I rev my engine to close to 6000 RPM at times. The rev limit on diesels is considerably lower than that (around 4000 RPM). Diesels contaminate oil much faster than gas engines, so diesel oils have more detergents. Detergents are antagonistic to the ZDDP, ZDDP tries to cling to parts, detergents try to clean it off. Using diesel oil in the past was a common practice for increased ZDDP levels, but even the latest diesel oils have less ZDDP than in the past.

Jim Weise built the engine in my signature. It left his shop using Joe Gibbs oil, and Jim recommended that I use that same oil. I have run for 4 years now down at Cecil County Dragway with nothing but 11 second time slips. 12.00/qt. is steep for sure, but money well spent in IMO.

Have a look at this thread,

    Baldwin filters are excellent!

Paul, the first thing that cought my eye on the Gibbs site:

Of coarse they are selling higher price oil- but the diesel formula is changing and not for the better. I was also a fan of Rotella but the formula changed. I get the Brad Penn 10W 40...

I actually specify Joe Gibbs HR-2 for all my street/Strip builds.

Conventional 10-30 with a great storage additive.

About $8 a quart or so.

Or, you can use Valvoline VR-1 racing oil 10-30 wt, find that at Napa.. but it's not much cheaper, if at all.
