Hey all...I’ve been talking to Russ at Centerville Auto about 4 bbl intakes for the 364. He has one for $500. Anyways, his contention is that I will see a significant power increase going to a 4 bbl like 50+ HP. He says use at least a 600 cfm if not a 750. Horsepower gain sounds generous but what I was trying to ascertain is - aside from allowing for a bigger metering device (carb) - does the 4bbl intake simply have much better flow characteristics than the 2bbl intake? I realize Doc’s mods help the 4 bbl but let’s put that concept aside for a bit...

Apples to apples...would my 2 bbl intake and carb flow and produce same power as a 4 bbl with an adapter to run my 2 bbl carb?

One reason I ask is Holley Sniper efi says their 2 bbl system supports up to 350hp - more than enough for my ‘60 LeSabre. Holley site did not list the unit’s max cfm, cuz they dont really go by cfm on these injection units! So I was told by Nathan at Holley. He did say the 2 bbl stuff should be more than enough and sees no reason to go to the 4 bbl intake.

Please pipe in with your thoughts, but lets leave cost issues or preferences out of the conversation. Thanks!

    Hi,

Not sure on hp or flow differences, but there are cheaper ones out there, for that matter I believe there were 3x2 and 2x4 intakes out there, as 364 is by itself.

Just going by factory numbers 30-40 might be more realistic hp increase.

    Regards,

I would guess the HP number is lower as well.

I will say this, I’ve heard from numerous sources that the aftermarket multicarb intakes flow terribly. Looks cool, but thats it.

When I put a stock 4 bbl intake on my 264, the power increase was phenomenal, and as a big surprise, when driven conservatively, the gas mileage improved. I have also heard that the stock manifolds are hard to beat for flow. $500 seems a bit steep for a 364 intake manifold.

  5. 364 4 barrel manifolds are very hard to find right now and bring a premium. The aftermarket ones offer no performance advantage over the stock version. There are adapters out there to make a 401 manifold fit a 364

Thanks John, I appreciate the feedback!

Pretty sure Im gonna “go for it”. Maybe even a little cam upgrade too

Id still love to do an experiment to see a flow comparison. Like temporarily putting the 2 bbl on the 4 bbl intake.

OK so I got a nice, clean 4bbl intake coming my way. I was told by Russ Martin of Centerville Auto that the 364 does great with a 750 Carter/Edelbrock.

Ive seen reconditioned Edel 750s for reasonable prices, but this new Edelbrock AVS2 carb is getting great reviews. Comes in 650 or 800.

Is that too big? Perhaps I can limit the max opening just a bit? Share your thoughts and experiences!

700 or 750 regular AFB NOT an AVS.

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. Are you saying not to use any Edelbrock - old style or new style? Can you explain why?

I should have said the older style Edelbrock. One of the reasons I don't particularly like the AVS is the Adjustable Venturi. Too many people try to make things better but end up going backwards causing more problems/troubles. The older style Edelbrock/AFB has a weighted flap in the rear & will only open as much as air demand is actually needed. Doing dyno testing I noticed a few times the rear flap wasn't opening all the way while the throttle was wide open. I got a long screwdriver while it was still pulling & opened it all the way. The engine hesitated for a split second, but didn't gain or lose any HP or torque.
