Hi, I'm planning on putting a sbb350 in my project car. I would like an overdrive transmission and my top candidate is the 700r4. What will it take to mate the two. Will a 700r4 out of a chevy do? What would be my manual transmission options as well. I'm on a budget, and I live in LA with Many doner cars to my disposal and good prices in shops. Thank you for reading. RONNIE
With one of these you use to bolt the 700R4 to a sbb 350; http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Speedwa...ash=item3cf8ed1233:g:LN0AAOSweW5U9ie8&vxp=mtr There are others available with this one being the most budget friendly I found doing a quick search. They make them 2 ways, one being for a BOP engine to bolt to a Chevy trans and for a Chevy engine to bolt to a BOP trans, with the one in the link the one you would need. Not sure about manual transmission options. GL Derek
If you see the picture, that kind of what confused me or has me confused. The link you sent me is an adapter. Does that mean it will adapt to the chevy bellhousing or will I need to find a bop bellhousing as well, sorry I'm just trying to understand. The pic bellow is a 700r4 in my local ads
The first picture, the trans on the right would bolt to your sbb engine. The adapter allows you to bolt an engine with that bolt pattern to a Chevy trans, the trans on the left. Derek
are there any bop 700r4 or was it after the time when chevy was making engines for all of GM. Will there be a gasket material in between the adapter needed? Thanks RONNIE
I think most if not all 700R4 transmissions have the Chevy bolt pattern. And no, you don't install a gasket between the engine and trans, not even with an adapter. Do a Google or Bing search for the 700R4 because certain years are better than others to start with that will handle more power. Gaskets are mainly to seal in liquids, vacuum or compression, no need for them when bolting two self contained units together. You actually want the 2 clean machined surfaces bolted together for a more accurate alignment of the 2 components. Derek
You can put a TH 200-4R behind a Buick motor because it is universal fit. It is about the same dimensions as a TH 350 but with a lower 1st and 4th OD. I needs to be beefed up if you are raising the horsepower. This is the same type of trans behind the turbo Buick V6 cars.
There are 700R4's and 2004R's with multi-bolt patterns, meaning they have both Chevy and BOP. That would be best if you could use one of those. If you use an adapter, you have to remember to place shims between the converter and flexplate,to keep the converter engaged correctly.
If you do find a multi pattern 700R4 it would most likely be a less desirable earlier year to source as a core because of all the expensive upgrades it would need to handle even the sbb 350's torque. The best years to source as a core are the '87-'91 700R4's.GL Derek
The 2004R is a direct bolt in, that is what I have and no problems. using a lockup TQ convertor. I run a 373 gear with 28" tall tire and run at 2200 rpm with it locked up. this has been in my car for 10 years now. I run my own switch to lock up the convertor and can lock it up in 3rd gear when driving at about 40 mph when not in overdrive. No adapters needed.
I am not real familiar with the overdrive,as far as which ones are more desirable, but from what I have seen, more guys are running the 2004R. I've seen some behind some 600+HP big blocks, but the transmissions were not stock either.
