I'd like to put a dual exhaust on my '66 'Lark, which has a 300 CI V8. I assume that this engine came from the factory with a single exhaust system only, 'cause I've yet to run across a dual exhaust set-up for it. However, I do see duals advertised for the '66s with 401 or 340 engines. So, my question is: Can I use the headpipes from a 340 or 401 on my 300? Or, if they will not bolt on directly, can they be adapted? Or, is there another product (i.e. something from a 215, 350, etc.) that I can use? Since no one makes headers for this engine, using the stock exhaust manifolds will be a must. Also, I'd really like to avoid cutting apart my "Y" pipe, so I'd really like to bolt to the manifolds with something. Suggestions?
I'm not certain if anyone makes a pair of stock headpipes for a 300. I know I could fabricate some, but I just wondered if the 401 or 340 headpipes would bolt up and have the correct bend(s).
I haven't seen any pre-fab dual exhaust kits for your engine that don't require headers. Poston Enterprises advertises headers for 300/340 engines. They are not cheap. Why bother unless you are going to race the car? The stock manifolds are pretty efficient. Just have a local muffler shop bend you a set of 2" pipes from the manifolds back. I've spoken with quite a few 300 owners who did that and were happy with the results.
No, no racing involved-just trying to pump every bit of performance I can out of this little engine. I definitely am not going to bother putting headers on it, so I guess I'll contact a local shop. Thanks for the advise.
