I know you can get a 3.08 or higher gear for a 2 series Chevy carrier (even some low 4.xx's), but I haven't been able to find anything for the Buick 8.2" 10 bolt. I'm just looking to go up to a 3.55, but I dont want to have to find a 3 series Buick carrier... Anyone confirm this? It'd be so much easier to use a gear specially manufacured for the standard 2.xx carriers found in most 64-67 Buick Abody's. Help!!!
Remove your 8.2 and store it. Get a 71-2 Skylark/Cutlass 8.5" rear and your problems will be solved. Lotsa of gears and posi units to choose from and cheaper too! You may have to shorten your driveshaft 1-1.5". If you are real sneaky, you can grind off the tabs at 5 and 7 o'clock and no one will know you have an 8.5"
The problem with that is I'm currently running a 5" backspacing, 15x8" rim with a 275/50 tire and it JUST fits... and seeing as I spent some change on the wheel/tire package not even a month ago, I'd like to keep this 8.2 as long as I possibly can. If I can just throw a gear in it, along with a powertraxx I'd be good to go...
Spacer for gears? I have the same question you do regarding the gears. i think i read somewher that you can get a spacer to put in the carrier, which will allow you to use a 3 series gear. Can anyone help answer this? Has anyone done this yet? o No:
Ring gear spacer Years ago I replaced the 3:08 gears in my 65 lesabre with a set of 3:90 gears... Had to add a ring gear spacer... Worked great. Tom :TU:
spacer Spacers do work fine as long as you install them with the correct bolts and washers on the 8.5 old carriers if needed. 8.2 old style will use the 8.2 spacer in the summit catalog and the newer 8.2 with reverse (left hand threaded bolts) will require the 8.5 spacer. Good luck. I do have a 3 series 8.2 eaton clutch type posi for 450.00 (brand new never used) guy traded it to me on a 12 bolt job I did for him. He decided he needed more strength for slick action at the track. The 8.2 BOP posis run 599.00 at summit and jegs. I will throw in the shipping too...as long as you are in the lower 48 states. Jim
