Friend of mine has what he says is a 200R4 trans. He says "
Was told it’s already rebuild however not holding pressure. May be something easy." Any suggestions and is this a 200R4 useable on a Buick 350?

Can't say why it's not holding pressure but it's definitely a 200-4R and it's definitely useable behind a 350 Buick. The quickest telltale sign of a 200-4R is it's a one piece case, no separate bolt-on tail shaft housing like most every other automatic transmission has.

67skylark27 has one behind a 340 and I have one behind a 350 Pontiac. You really need a 3.23 to 3.70 rear ratio for it not to bog the engine in overdrive. Your car may have come with a 2.73 rear. I'm not an AT guy but I assume you checked the obvious stuff like, has the filter/pick-up fallen out of place? lf the pump is starved for fluid and it runs too long without pressure it could damage the pump. That's about all I know.

I haven't checked anything. Friend(recent acquaintance) just put it up for sale and I knew they would work with my 72 350 given the rear end gears are within an acceptable range. Mine I suspect are the 2.73's and would need changing. I'm always looking for the next project or parts to buy. And I figured since it was local to me and $200 I'd pick it up. I say future project because I'm currently starting a engine rebuild. But that's another thread to come.

yes that's a 200-4r and yes you can use that behind a buick 350. at $200 I would definitely pick it up.

Sounds like its in unknown condition. You could just throw it in the car and try it, and deal with any issues that come up....or

...and this is what I would do....
Take it apart while is out of the car, and give it a good inspection. If it had been rebuilt, most of the new pieces will still be good. Put it back together and use air pressure to check your seals. Then get it in the car with some confidence that it is going to be worth the install.

Awhile back I wrote a "200-4r swap summary" thread that covers a LOT of info on the rebuild and swap behind a sbb350. I don't think its a sticky post, but its in the "Juice Box" forum. EDIT found it -

Thanks for the reply... I did what all us Buick guys do when parts are presented to us(even if we're not looking for them) and purchased the trans. I'll have to get me one of those manuals and see if I can find anything wrong with it when and if I make the trans an rear end change.

    Thanks,
    Todd

I grabbed one recently that popped up on craigslist in the next town over for $200. Strike when the iron is hot. If you're looking for one you'll never find one so... get while the getting is good, I say.
