How do you know that the car has "77 thousand kms" when the speedometer has MPH on the outside/big ring and KMH on the smaller inside ring? Wouldn't the analog (mechanical) speedometer show miles rather than kilometers???

If the outer ring is in miles, then the odo would also be in miles. good eye. G.M's were transitioning to km for Canada cars in that era. All road signs converted to metric in 1977.

When you hit 55 mph on the speedo, that are written in red letters, you'll find yourself traveling through time.. Snow on the windscreen or not..

Yeah, I thought that if the outer speedo ring was in kmh, then the odo would be in km's.

Hey! I've got one of those, except 16 years newer! A snow-bound LeSabre! Same colour too!:D
Thanks Gary, but I'm out of the beater business for a while, I'm driving a 2004 Solara convertible right now, my LeSabre died a miserable death and is headed for the wrecker this weekend.
And surprisingly enough, that Solara convertible has a heater that will cook you out of the car; it kept the windows clear at -40!

The transition to km in Canada happened long before '85. For the '78 model year it was federally mandated that all vehicles sold in Canada have the primary speedometer markings (and odometer) read in km/h.

So, this '85 LeSabre would have been a USA market car originally? I've spent a fair amount of time in Canada growing up (in the '80's) and I always thought that the cars with the dominant km/h readings (reverse of the USA cars showing mph dominant and km/h smaller/inner) were built as Canadian market cars.

Yup has to have been an American import at some time. Also the 55 highlighted in red was an American fuel savings effort back in the day when they lowered the speed limit in most States.
