I have a 1971 Buick Skylark that I want to install a posi unit in. Does anybody know what the stock non-posi unit was in this car... 8.2 ?...8.5 ?
28 spline ? What posi unit should I be looking for. Do you have one for sale?

    landis1471@comcast.net Thanks Wes !!!

    1971 should be a 28 spline, 8.5 rear.

71 and up were the 8.5 rear with 28 spline axles, more parts available for them as opposed to the 8.2 that were used in 70 and back.Eaton is supposed to have a decent posi unit but I have no experience with them.I don't have any spareposi's laying around for sale.

    Wes,
The 8.5" posi units, 3 series GM, is 410408 and has 4 large "8" on the case. You can find them in GM cars from 71-88. If you have no luck in the local salvage yards, www.ebay.com always has them.

Hi Wes -you are in luck - that is the "corporate" rear and many units will fit that. You should check with oPh or Jim's (MONZAZ) on this board, they may not be too far from you. They build rears for a living. Units are available from Summit, Jegs, and others. Do a search on this board for posi and you will see other advice/info as well. Also, someone on the board had a line on units at a discount.
