    Hi all,

New to me 1971 GS 455, I just changed the oil and and added 5qts with filter change, per this forum and every other book I can find. The motor is a 1971 but looks like out of a Riviera, serial number starts at 99 and the dipstick is in the block not a tube. Checked the oil and it looks like 1 qt over the operating mark. The dipstick says 4 qts on it?? Stock motor and oil pan. It looks to me like the oil filter drains mostly in the pan, so is this the reason for the overfill but when running the level is correct?
Thoughts, do you drain the quart or leave it as is knowing there is 5 in there?
    Thanks

5 QTS, 71 455 did not have that dip stick early 70 did.

5 quart capacity. Don't run it a quart low. The filter should retain the oil, but, some do not.

Next oil change, park the car on level pavement. Drain all the oil, install a filter with an anti-drainback valve. Remove jack and jack stands, so vehicle is level. Refill with 5 quarts, start engine, run long enough for the oil light to go out, or to build proper pressure on the gauge.

Shut off engine, let it sit for an hour. Wipe off dipstick, check oil level. Adjust dipstick as needed so it shows "full".
