I am looking for a good "Driver Quality" 15" WG wheel to match the (3) I have off my 70 stage 1...

    My date codes are 3/31, 4/1, 4/2...

Looking for one of these or real close to make a full set of 4... might even entertain a spare to make 5...

    Thank You,
    Jeff

Hi Jeff, have 3 WG wheels also looking for 1-2, maybe one for spare. Date code of December 1969. Wondering if there are any left out there. If I come across an odd number set I'll contact you. Todd

Jeff. I have been trying to find two wheels dated 4/9 for quite some time. If and when i do, I will have a 3/31 dated wheel available.

Todd. I have not had the opportunity to look for the December wheel. Bear with me.

    I have 4 WG's:

    2/20
    3/23
    3/31
    4/9

I hate to sell just one or two but may sell the set of 4 if we can all work something out. What are singles selling for if chrome is pretty nice?

I would be interested in 2 wheels after Jeff decides what he wants. Thanks Todd

Todd - if you buy the 2/20 and 3/23, maybe Jeff will want the 3/31 and 4/9, and trade Jim the 4/9 for another 3/31? :idea2:

Has anyone seen a recent sale of single's or a set of WG's to get a baseline on pricing?

I can get pics tonight if we can figure this out.

At one time, near perfect WG's would fetch $200 each. And around $150 for driver quality (faded chrome - no rust) wheels. Since Steve Caruso began offering his reproduction wheels on the correct 1970 centers, the price of originals has fallen somewhat. I've not seen a recent sale of nice original wheels.

I will get up in the garage rafters today and verify my inventory. I know I have numerous wheels dated between November 1969 and May 1970. I'll post my findings here. Hopefully we can come up with the dates everyone seeks.

I bought a really nice set recently, but you don't want to know what I paid:grin:

The first half of the 70 production year did not use the WG stampings, so there are no December "WG" stamped wheels. I beleive early to mid February is when the first WG codes were stamped on the wheels. Prior to that, the 15x7's were stamped 7.0, but they are identical in lip edge and offset as the WG's.

If original WG's are now worth less than the reproductions, I'm just going to keep my set together. I would think that original wheels with good chrome would be worth more than reproductions without the stampings.

Jason - none of your deals should be included in any recent sales trends, except possibly for buyers who want to learn to negotiate like you! :bla:

Just out of curiousity, I looked at the date codes on my wheels. Two wheels say M4/0 7 20, one says M4/0 2 18 and the 4th says M4/0 2 20. Am I correct in deciphering the first one for example as July 20th 1970?

Correct. Is the February 18th a WG or 7.0? That is pretty close to the time they switched stampings.

Yes, they're all WG's. The two July wheels are strange. These wheels came off my car in 1975. My car is a March build. So it looks as though 2 of them had been replaced at that point. Maybe they were replaced under warranty? :Do No: . Seems if they were swapped later on, around 73,74, what are the chances they would even be WG's at that point? And so close to the build date?

Regarding the 1970 Buick production of 15 x 7 (small 4.75 bolt pattern) wheels and progression of parts codes during the production year, the excerpt below from an older thread is a response from Duane Heckman to a related question about the different codes for 15 x 7 chrome Rallye wheels Buick produced in 1970:

    Re: Wheel code 70 GSX

    Guys,
Buick (ie Motor Wheels for this instance) did not start using application codes on wheels until the middle of the 1970 production year. Before that they simply used the size (ie "7.0" for the 15" wheels, or "6.0" for the 14" wheels) and rim codes to tell them apart.

The reason Motor Wheel had to add an application code was because the various makes, Buick, Chevy, Olds, etc started using the same style wheels on different models. This forced MW to change the back spacing on certain wheel designs and forced them to devise a way to differentiate them, hence APPLICATION CODES.

The first usage (I have seen) of the application code "WG" had a rim date of something like Feb 20, 1970. Anything that had wheels built before that should have the "7.0" designation.

Do we have everything straight now?

It's a trick question, we all know you didn't pay anything. Or, maybe the Seller paid you???

Hey James could you post some pics of rims. I am looking for 7.0 wheels, but I have been looking for a while. So wg wheels will have to do. Thanks Todd
