I've just disassembled original 1970 Skylark door-mounted chrome mirrors, both a driver's side remote control mirror and a passenger's side mirror. I've done this to have the housings and bases rechromed. I'm having new mirrors made at the local glass shop too.

To disassemble the driver's side remote control mirror, tilt the glass "in" at the top to get access to the Phillips head screw. Unscrew this to separate the tilt mechanism from the housing. Note that the glass can be left in place (there's no need to remove it as I have done).

Next, unclip the tripod retainer to disassemble the joystick. Now separate the three cables from the joy stick. One cable is red, another green, another yellow gold. Mark their locations for proper reassembly to the joystick. The soft cast metal housing has been crimped to keep the cables in place so pry them apart to release the cables. Now slide the cables (still attached to the mirror tilt mechanism) free of the housing and base.

To disassemble the passenger's side mirror requires breaking the mirror glass, grinding away the mushroomed ends that retain the steel retainer for the pivot ball, and finally punching out the pivot ball pedestal.

I ground down the inside end of the pivot ball pedestal, from inside the mirror housing, believing that it too had been pressed into place and its end mushroomed. That may not have been necessary, as I eventually got it out by simply hammering it out with a punch. This step took quite a bit of force!

I drilled and tapped holes for retaining screws for the steel retainer, to be used upon reassembly. Before disassembly, the pivot ball was VERY stiff to move. The retaining screws and select washers now provide nearly this degree of clamping force to the steel retainer.

I'm hopeful that I'll be able to press the pivot ball pedestal back into the mirror housing.

I'll update this thread once the housings are back from being replated and the new mirror glass back from the glass shop.

I did the same to Drivers Side 1970 Remote Mirror a month ago.....waiting to get it back from the chromer :)

PS....the Electra, LeSabre Chrome Remote Mirrors....I a bit larger than that of a Skylark/GS.
