The rearend screwed up in my sister's lesabre, and I was trying to find out what cars share the same rearend so we can find one cheap and get it back on the road again. Any info is appreciated.

65-70 LeSabre/Electra/Wildcat should work. Riv is different.

    10 or 12 Bolt?

    George:

Are the years you listed all 10-bolt units? Is there a 12-bolt that will fit a 1970 LeSabre? I have a 10-bolt posi now and one of my future upgrades is to change to 3.73's or 4.10's. Just wondering if a 12-bolt could be an option for me.

    Thanks!

The 70 Wildcat I removed the posi from recently has a 10 bolt cover but a 12 bolt carrier. I "think" all of the full size cars that I removed a posi from had the same cover and 12 bolt internally. I have been told only the GS models(I guess that means Riv only) had the 3.42-up carriers. Have never found one of them in the local FL salvage yards.

    What?

    George:

So, the posi in my Buick may actually be a 12-bolt? Guess I need to remove the cover and start counting! Wouldn't that be something...

Ok George, here is the 64 dollar question--when looking at the internals of a fullsize buick rearend--how do to visibly tell the difference between a 12 vs 10 bolt internal.
    thanks in advance

A 12 bolt has 12 screws (technically not bolts since there are no nuts on them) that hold the ring gear to the differential.

Darn, I never saw an internal of a 12 bolt-----just the pumpkin covers---Learn someithing new every day.
Thanks George, I appreciate the info.

id large car 10 bolt rears

The covers appear to be the same on the 10 /10 8.2 mid size and the 10/12 8.8 internal guts. There is a larger more protruding buldge to the 10 / 12 bolt scalloped covered rear. Obviously to give room for more diameter of the ring gear. The bolt pattern is slightly larger on the cover in diameter too. Alot of times the big cars will have larger diameter brake drums and hardware/backing plates 11" I think. Good luck with your project. Jim
