Saw a post on Instagram on the GSX. Poster incorrectly claimed the 455 had the most torque for any American car till the Viper, but what I'm curious about is the X meaning. The poster claimed it was "Extra," which I don't think it is at all. In fact, I think I should be groaning with that response. I think the X is just nonsensical, much like Plymouth's GTX or any other name with an X to it--it sounds neat. At best, it may be "Experimental" because it was initially a marketing idea that came to light as a show car. Can someone clue me in?
I knew that Brad, that's funny too, because I was going to say he should ask you because you had a bunch of them.
Thank you! The trivia question wasn't worded as "muscle car." And I think it's worth pointing out the Cutlass SX with the 4bbl. 455 also had the same torque rating: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/olds/ol70/bilder/39.jpg
There is the remaining issue of factory ratings versus actual measurements today for Buick and the other makes. I think JW has stated that no stock Buick 455 rebuild has ever made 510 foot pounds or close to it.
So speaking of GSX's... When I was a kid there was a Stage One Saturn Yellow car that sat close to our house in Denver. We were convinced that we were going to own. So much so we had the hood tach off of it. Anybody own a Stage One GSX with Denver roots out there?...
If I remember correctly... I thought that the article said "American Car" not "American Muscle Car" so... if that indeed is the case then the article would still be wrong in saying that Buick had the most torque of any "American car" up until the 2003 Dodge Viper @ 525 ft.lbs. The Cadillac would be the winner for torque output for "American Cars" till the year of 2007 when the Viper produced 560 ft.lbs. 1970 Cadillac torque 550 ft.lbs 1970 Buick torque 510 ft.lbs I believe nothing was stated about any mention of Cadillac being a muscle car. The Buick 455 had quite a torque record to enjoy for "Musclecars" for 33 years and with two less cylinders than the V10 Viper. And...the torque on the 03 Viper 505 cid was 52.5 ft.lbs per cylinder X 10 The 70 Buick 455 was 63.75 ft.lbs per cylinder X 8. So...give the Buick two more cylinders like the Viper and what would the torque rating be then for the Buick and how many more years would it hold the torque record after 2003? Huuum? They're just a bunch of numbers anyway portrayed by all the manufacturers to entice buyers!
Too bad it got away... I should have given the guy the $1250 he wanted for the 70 Superbird in 1979...
Boy no kidding. So many stories back then. That GSX got sold for I think 750.00. We stopped by over and over. No not yet. No not yet he kept saying. Then one day it was gone.
