1970 GSX air cleaner

    Where do the vacuum lines connect to operate the shutters>

    The car is a 72. Motor may be out of a 70 GSX Not sure.

    Look up the year engine or take a picture and post it. There are two letters beside the dip stick hole. The vacuum tree may be different. Do you have a 72 ram air cleaner housing a 71 or 70?

    Could not find the code beside the dipstick. Numbers on air cleaner base is 1233101 The guy I bought it from said the motor is a 1970 engine casting 1231718

    The shutters? Are you talking about the snorkel doors? If so, there is a temperature sensor in the base of the air cleaner. Once side goes to the snorkel, the other side gets manifold vacuum.

    Just hook the temperature sensor to manifold vacuum, doesn't matter the source, easiest is the carburetor.

    I am trying to get the shutters operational on the ram air. I figured I am missing the temp sensor. Once installed where do I hook the lines to?

    Yes you are. You can see the two holes for it on your underside picture. The sensor has two nipples that push through those 2 holes. One goes to the vacuum motor on the snorkel, the other goes to a manifold vacuum source. The doors work on vacuum modified by the sensor.

    Rock auto still has some . This is the last cheap one . There is an ATS 2 . Just get one off an old air cleaner. I have rarely seen them go bad . It regulates vacuum to the " Flapper " doors according to air inlet temperature . Vital on Northern cars like Larry's and mine . Makes cars "Driveable " in 50* or less by closing off the Flappers and using the heated air off the Exhaust Manifold .

    Thanks for tip on replacement part at Rock Auto; looks like it should fit with no issues. I have dual flappers on my air cleaner; assume I just T them off a common line on one side and attach other lead to manifold source per Larry's info. Thanks for elaborating on this set up.

    You should test your Flappers with a Vacuum hand pump and make sure they actually operate . Even though they are rivited on they can be swapped out .

    Thanks! I have checked both flapper motors with the hand pump and they are working correctly. Just need a working temp sensor to properly control vac/air routing . My old sensor would not drop vacuum when warm leaving the flappers activated at all times.

    Define "warm". How many degrees F.?

    After 20 minutes of driving they were still active (during summertime). My understanding is the temp sensor should cut vacuum somewhere around 110 degrees ?!

    Correct, the doors move to keep the temperature inside the air cleaner ~ 110*

    I have always ran these disconnected and snorkels open all the time, never had any issues in Colorado. I always thought this was just a way to help bring the engine up to operating temp quicker to help emissions. I don't see where a warmer air charge would be useful any other way.
