The shifter wasn't with the car when I got it, however my brother found one that may have been from the car. He's bringing it to me today so I'll be able to check it out. The one he found doesn't have a handle though. Also I don't think I'll need to replace the floor, but I didn't know that about the 4spd jump. That's really interesting how they fabricated it!
That is fantastic!!! Your knowledge is unmatched thank you for looking at those pictures, I should have the shifter in my hands today! So excited!
The handles pop up on eBay from time to time or you could post in the parts wanted forum. Someone has one laying around.
Just a thought about the parts you'll need. Try to make as complete a list as possible now and buy the parts you need as soon as possible as many are getting harder and harder to find. Prices aren't standing still either.
So the shifter we found seems to be from a Chevelle, but dad never had a Chevelle, so I'm thinking he was going to put it into the GS. It doesn't have a handle on it, so I may go with a new shifter entirely or use this one. Depends on funds I guess..
If you look at the rods and the levers, there should be some 4 digit numbers stamped on them. Also, look at the bottom of the chrome handle. Should be a 4 digit number on there too. Take a pic of the shifter without the boot covering it up and post it all here. I can reverse look up the original application based on that info
Jason or Brett, surely one of you has a picture or two of the correct shifter you could post. Please.
I need to get it cleaned up, its got some oil and grease residue on it, for sure. I have a cleaning tank here at work, I will try to do that today and post some pictures of it without the boot.
Here is the correct 70-72 shifter. Stamped "3138" on the case. Straight, push in/ bayonet style handle receiver. 68-72 Buick chrome handle. Stamped "5335". Same shifter handle for console and non console applications Factory 70-72 shifter rods, levers and shifter mount- The levers in the shifter mechanism will be stamped 4172, 7171 and 6699-
And if you really want to get crazy..... a factory equipped Hurst Competition Plus shifter will be stamped with a number like this. The number was for Hurst internal use. I believe it was used for warranty claims at Hurst to identify the manufacturer (Buick, Olds, Chevrolet, etc) and the model year. This is the original shifter that is out of my 70 Stage 1 4 speed. I have another 70 Buick shifter that came out of a 70 GSX. Both shifters have the same number stamped in them
That doesn't quite help me. Jesi, give me the 4 digit numbers off the rods and levers. And the 4 digit number off the bottom of the chrome shifter. Its got a bolt on chrome handle right?
