It's not 100% clear to me in the Service Manual the actual routing of the center console wiring harness. Does it go behind the heater/ac box (towards the front of the car) or in front (towards the rear) as it makes its way from the main harness to the console. Thanks, Tom

I would say in front off the instrument panel harness. The 1970 has the neutral safety switch in the console. I believe 71 and later was on the column regardless of whether the car was column or console shift. Even in that case, the wiring would need to be in the passenger compartment side.

I thought I read that during the '70 production year, there was a change in long console cars from the neutral safety switch mounted in the console to being mounted in the "regular" place in the column just like auto column cars. I am not sure if it was a changeover at mid year (like so many other changes), or if it was a plant issue (Buick vs. GMAD). Either way, the difference in mounting location could change the ultimate routing of a harness.

    Check this V8Buick thread:
    http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/neutral-switch-factory-floor-shift.125466/

"I believe through mid-70 console cars had it on the shifter. Mid-70 up it's on the column, period. My 04D 70 has a floor shift and column neutral safety switch."

So, on auto console-equipped cars with the neutral safety switch mounted on the colum, it appears that the same shift rod(s) that actuated the column moves the internal column mechanicals to operate the neutral safety switch and the redundant (dash) gear indicator dial (P - R - N - D - 2- 1).
