I replaced my cowl on my GS due to being rusted to swiss cheese behind the windshield. These brackets are there apparently to hold the back of the hood down tight I'm guessing? I haven't welded them back on to the new cowl, do I need them?

My 69 has them. I'm trying to figure out how to get the rear of the hood up a bit, so its level with the fender.

My ‘68 has them. I think they’re for safety in a crash; they’ll stop the hood from coming through the windshield.

Patrick is correct, they are to stop the hood from going thru the windshield and killing you.
The originals on my 69 were cut off when the top panel was replaced and they were put back on.

In 1970 they added more crumple zones to the hood and they were not needed.

This was all done due to federal safety requirements.
