Hopefully soon! I was right in your area on Fathers Day but you were gone. I am limping it around now. I have lost most of first gear so I am looking for a tranny. Thinking about the 200-4r swap I keep reading about. Will bolt up and give me a 4 speed auto. Or I will bolt up a st300 again if I can find one cheap enough.
Looks great. I like the spoiler. It's on my wish list. I also added scoops recently. I like the look.
The spoiler really was the final touch. I got it from spoilers by randy. I think I saw them listed on ebay now too. Love the hood scoops on the Special. Nice and personalized then!
I am moving forward with the 200-4r tranny swap. Should get her going again in a week. Will be sweet when done. Also now considering a rear gear swap!
Re: 1967 Skylark Nearing Completion - Update I scored a tranny from a GN/Monte SS. 200-4r Swap!!!!!! It went exactly as most of the articles said it would. Bolted in and the driveshaft fit like it was supposed to. I was lucky to find the CZ code with the hardened parts in it. Moved the crossmember back. Linkage worked. Just had to weld my exhaust back up when I was done. The B&M converter lockup kit works great. They just didn't provide the much needed brake light switch which I found at Autozone for 9.00. The Skylark brake switch has a 12v source not just an open ground. So switch DR497 has both, 4 terminals, two always open, two closed. Will get that in and be in business. The tranny has transformed the car! Super fast off the line and I'm running 1500rpms at 55-60mph. Just awesome!!!!!!!
I am looking at gears in the future. At 60mph I am only running 1600 rpms. Good for mileage but I'd rather be around 1800rpm there. I am not going to complain, I'll just drive a little faster........ I saw some 3.36's for sale. I think I have the 8.2 rear, will do posi right away too... about 700 bucks for that swap. The car would really scoot after that!
Last thing to work out is a vibration up around 60mph. Seems to vary with amount of weight in the trunk. I shimmed up the tranny a bit and that did help so I'll have to keep at that. Have to adjust the driveshaft pinion angle a little more. Car really likes around 70mph so once I get the vibration gone it will be sweet when cruising the interstate on longer trips. The b&m lock up kit is working well and the brake light switch is more convenient. No need for a vacuum switch. New headlights today too..........
Finally got a pic at the newly redone McDonalds in Green Bay. Had to drive right up on the grass to get it but didn't get a hard time about it.
Update. Did some more finishing touches on the car. I redid the tranny crossmember mounts and adjusted the placement of the exhaust h pipe so it wouldn't rattle on the crossmember. What has made the biggest difference has been the replacement of the rear coil springs. Now I don't have to have the air shocks pumped up all the way for proper ride height! Also put on an automatic electric choke on the carb. Works awesome! I've gotten rid of most of the small vibration by balancing the tires again, and putting in new ujoints in the driveshaft. It all is helping.
Being bored over the winter I hunted down a NB coded 340-4 engine and gave it a freshening. 10.25 compression. Mainly did work on the heads as everything else was in perfect shape. Guy said it was low mileage and he was right. Cylinder walls still had the crosshatching and no ridge at the top. The heads needed a full cleaning and valve relapping. I ported the heads and gasket matched everything right away. New paint on everything too. Should be an easy swap and give me some more power! Planning on bench starting it up and putting it in May 3rd when I pull it out of storage. Pretty easy carb to rebuild too. I have the tranny linkage kit ordered to adapt it to my 200-4r right away. Also, don't worry, I will ditch the yellow wires! (The rockers picture is just how I found it after pulling the valve covers off - nice and clean)
The engine build is complete and installed, and back on the road. Some minor things to tweek but it's running pretty darn good. Some timing adjustments, hose rerouting and I need to make up a better bracket for the TV cable. The engine fired up immediately with a little gas down the carb and ran nice and smooth after pulling the timing back a bit. I couldn't be happier. 40psi oil pressure right away too, so priming it worked just fine. Only really minor glitch I had was the dipstick tube. I didn't have it down in all the way and nut tightened so it blew some oil on the exhaust manifold when I would give it the beans. Sealed that up and we're good to go. Update: Motor is running excellent. I am running non ethanol 89 in it and have initial timing at about 8 degrees. Have about 4000 miles on it now, one trip was 21mpgs. I will be working on the distributor next and dial in the total timing in the spring after I get the rear gears in. Gears should allow me to get total timing in a little earlier if I've read everything correctly. The extra power of the 340 and having a 4 barrel is awesome! I also got rid of the yellow wires. Gave my son the project of swapping them to black and routing them nicely. He did a great job.
I pulled the grill and headlight bezels and gave them a new look, added a lot more black. I really like it!
I finally found a little time to delve into the stumbling at high rpm. I read a lot of posts for similar issues and one came up with more information on the dwell setting. It was the dwell! I must have messed around with the timing a bit after setting the dwell and it was at about .32. I readjusted the idle screws a bit, reset the dwell and timing twice and all is great. .29 on the dwell and went from 12 degrees of advance to 10. I run 89 ethanol free and had just a touch of pinging at 12, 10 is perfect. I can finally tromp on it full throttle. I can be rolling at 20mph and put it down and bust the rear loose. Now if I could just get my rear gears done, I could finally run the quarter a couple times. Update: I put in the Crane Conversion kit - best money spent this year. Update #2: Looking back, the leaking of the bushings on the carb linkage was probably starting about this time also...
