Yo 21stCenturyFritznoidmaaaan, FYI: the "clapped out Stage 1 with the saws-alled chunk outta the whole back outta it" is quite possibly a dealer installed COLD AIR conversion. I've learned that 68-69 OTC Cold Air Intake Kit that were ordered thru a dealer, the backside of the air cleaner would've been CUT OUT BY HAND..... thus the ragged clapped out edge, as you describe it. . .
