1964 Cutlass Axle

    Is the rear axle out of a 64 Cutlass the same as the axle in a 65 Skylark? Main concern is drum to drum width. May have a chance to pick one up to use in my bbb 200-4R build. Have the gears changed in this one and keep my original with stock gears in case I ever swap back.

    Many years ago (40), I swapped the rear from a 1965 F-85 to my 1964 Special. Ran 60s on 7 inch Cragers with no troubles/clearance issues at all.

    I have the rear axle, drum to drum from my 1964 Skylark Convertible, 2.78 open. It is available from Florida Panhandle, and I can ship it Fastnal actual costs.
    Rather not junk it, due to the fact of the width of the 64-65 A bodies, and someone might need/want it.

    But I am getting ready to clean the garage and it's on the short list.

    I think all 64-72 GM A body rears will bolt in (interchange). Are those 2 rears exactly the same? Someone else can explain that. They should both be 8.2 10 bolt rears, BOP.

    I knew all the 72 and older would fit but some of the newer ones are wider. I’m running a 275/60 tire on an 8” wheel and it’s a close fit.

    I found someone local parting out a Cutlass hence my question. But if it doesn’t work out we might can do something. Be nice if I could get down that way with my big truck and I could just toss it in there ;)

    The upper control arm bushings are tough to find.... the '64 has a smaller outside diameter than '65-up.

    The 64-67 A body rear ends were one inch narrower than the 68-72 generation. Backing plate to backing plate. The control arm mount points did not change. There were divisional specific rears - i.e. B, O types vs. the Chev C clip types. This may affect driveshaft length due to slight differences in yoke position. Pictured is what believe is a '66 Pontiac rear. With the distinctive cut outs at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. Am sure you can get expert advice from the several rear end specialists active here.

    64 65 are the only narrow rears in B. O . P. by the time 66 rolled in they were all 55.25" I have bunches of flat perch 55.25 rears from back in the day when I THOUGHT when a housing had flat perches it was 54.25.... Boy was I WRONG... lol.
    So your info is a bit on the wrong side also... Chevy did have the 8.125 (aka Chevy 8.2) 10 bolt and 12 bolt Chevy rear 54.25 width till 1967. then went with 55.25 like all the BOP cars.
    1967 - 1969 fire birds were even 55.25 which was wider than the Chevy Camaro 54.25. Pontiac had the WIDE TRACK and all the rest of Buick And olds just follow suite ...Suppose to be for BETTER handling etc.... :) Ok? Sure... Anything to sell a car.

    SO what I am saying here is MEASURE your housings...And where you measure from so you get the correct measurement.

    Pictures for reference... GREEN measurement either way will give you the HOUSING end FLANGE to flange measurements... The BLUE is the overall total width axle flange to axle flange
