So I inherited a 1964 electra from uncle who recently passed away. That was horrible, but he would have wanted me to drive this thing.. So I'm trying to get it to run! Any help would be awesome!

Now that I have rebuilt carb, drained and replaced gas, replaced fuel filter, replaced plugs wires cap and rotor it at least runs. Problem is that it really stumbles when accelerating. It sounds like it is backfiring, but it is really muffled, so maybe it's not.

the stumbling, misfiring whatever it is happens in park when revving or in drive. The carb is a carter afb 4 barrel. Looks like the only adjustment screws are the two on the front.

I will try to post some pictures here once I figure out how. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Remove the vacuum hose from the advance unit on the distributor, hook up a vacuum hose 2-3 ft long and suck on it, it should hold vacuum. If it does not, replace it. If OK, hook up a timing light and check your timing BY THE BOOK. It would also be better if you get a hand vacuum pump hooked up to it to see if your timing shifts when vacuum is applied and released. See how far it moves on the scale at the damper. If all is OK, try advancing the timing a few degrees from spec,

Check your accelerator pump action by removing air cleaner, look down carb and open throttle moderately quick. You should see 2 aggressive streams when you pump it. If not, you may have low float level or check ball missing.

Do you think I should replace the points and condenser? Some people at work were saying that

I've never used a timing light. ...I know I am supposed to look for a mark on the flywheel. .... but what do I hook the light up to? I assume a spark plug, but I'm kind of clueless when it comes tip older cars like this.

I don't mean to be an arse, but this is like pulling teeth. Are you afraid someone will come by unsolicited??? I know Maryland is not that big, BUT WHERE???

    What a nice Electra! :TU:
How many miles on it? Certainly looks to be an original untouched car. You'll get it running.
