Several years ago, some scum stole two aluminum wheels from the back of my nephews truck. Now, my sister lives only about three blocks from a local junkyard/ recycler. They went to the place and it just happened that one of the local bums just happened to have come by that morning with (TA_DAH!!!) two aluminum wheels... He was walking out from the area as they approached... It just happened to be the local bum that Sis USED to have mow her yard with her mower and her gas; all he did was the actual labor. For a VERY generous amount, IMHO. Well, he knows to NEVER come on the property again, especially after the arrest...and "prosecution". Bum is not allowed on the junkyard as well.
Shortly thereafter, all recyclers had to have permits/ licences, and pictures taken when processing.

Hate to hear this... but don't assume they are gone... Now is the time to get aggressive about finding them. As was mentioned, search the area, look in trash cans and dumpsters... once they saw what they were, they might have just chucked them out..

Assuming they kept them, then they need to turn them into money. First place they are going to go is a local speed shop/high performance engine shop or facility. You need to get a picture of them, print it out with your name and phone number, and give those flyers out to every machine shop and related business in your area.. I would go in about a 50 mile radius.. Offer a $100 reward for information that leads to their recovery.

Next is craigslist/facebook marketplace. Watch for them every day. They might not show up for a couple weeks, depends on how smart the thief is.. A smart one will hang onto them for a couple months, to let the heat die down..

File a police report. Theft over 1500 is a felony in a lot of jurisdictions.

File a UPS claim... now if the shipper valued them at 1500, then he had to have the driver sign a form to take them..UPS watches high value stuff pretty closely, and I believe that a signature is required for delivery of anything over 1000.00. Seems to me that I just dealt with that with a customer I was shipping some parts to, we had to ship it to their work because no one was going to be around to accept the delivery, and they would not deliver without a signature.

If your seller bs'ed the value to keep the shipping cost down, then your screwed...

watch race junk and other sites like that.. even this one.

Get the word out on social media.. facebook, twitter ect, posting here was a good thing.

    Good luck

    JW

Check FB Marketplace, Craigslist, Let Go, Pawn Shops, Metal Scrappers, Local Flea Markets, Speed Shops, Machine Shops and Junk Yards. I’d definitely file a police report. You never know maybe they will turn up on a traffic stop, search warrant etc. in the future. Most of your stolen stuff is heroin, crack or meth heads and is immediately traded/sold for drugs.

Sad to say. Probably somone in the complex. An order that expensive should of been sent signature required and insured. Was it signature required? You wrote( for some reason without a signature)
If so I would think that would fall back on UPS. That way you would of got them or have been paid. I would go door knocking and ask your neighbors if they saw anything.. Talk to the delivery driver. I see lots of good ideas posted.
Why would they open them there instead of hauling ass? I bet their close by. Maybe a neighbor. Those ring door bells are well worth the cash. Im really sorry you have to deal with this. Hope you nail them. .

A couple of things. Check your area, look for cameras, ring doorbells ect. Someone might have seen them... Also how did you pay? If by CC you might have recourse. Do you have renters insurance? Just some things to think about.. Sorry this happen, It sucks big time. Year before last someone broke into the garage I was renting and took a lot of my stuff and completely trashed the place a week before I was to move..

To get a signature for delivery, the shipper must indicate that on the manifest & pay extra. With anything that valuable, u should instruct the shipper to have the items remain at the delivery depot and u can pick them up there.

If anything they will be sold as scrap or discarded. If you didn't know what they were, it would be VERY difficult to figure out. And finding a buyer for what they are would be even more difficult.

I'll bet 5 bucks. Some one picked up what they thought was junk. ( sounds like your room mate was too lazy to bring the trash in) (((((( manager maybe))))) Took the junk to the complex trash area.. then the local dumpster picker that travels the area looking for old bikes, ironing boards, toasters, ETC. got them...

Personally I would look the person in the mirror. And tell him you should have made better arrangements for the delivery..

Forgive me, but I thing you're being a little harsh.

In these situations I tend to support the victim. OP is guilty of 3 things: wanting a better Buick, working hard to get it, and trusting fellow humans to do the right thing in his absence.

He already beat himself up in the first post...

Im sure there are bylaws about leaving junk in the open areas of OPs complex... UPS told the person at the address the package is at the bottom of the steps. Item was delivered..

This a apartment complex not a private residence.. Entry ways. Hallways. ETC must be keep clear.

Thanks all for your support and ideas! I have already filed a police report and yes this would qualify as a felony charge in this state if the thief is ever actually caught. I gave the police pictures of the heads and empty shipping box, and luckily one of the pictures included the casting numbers as a "unique identifier".

I have been checking on Craigslist looking for them, and I will try Facebook marketplace as well. I am also heading to the local flee market today to see if they ended up in someone's junk booth.

I will still try and file a UPS claim, though I have a feeling that won't lead to much. I paid the seller via PayPal, so will see if there's anyway to file a claim with them as well.

I will call local junkyards and speed shops, and hopefully something leads to a clue. I have already let 3 of the other local Buick guys know what happened just in case they actually end up on someone's 350. I guess I should check all the dumpsters in the area as well.

If anything happens I'll you you all know.

First sorry man, and dont worry all this bull will pass. Everyone has been sold from even me it all happens to us.

It was not a porch pirate..... because the trash was in your dumpster. Thief of opportunity and premeditation grab and GO GO GO.

It was not the post man. Because the box again is in your dumpster.

The box in your dumpster is the biggest freaking clue here. I assume only people in your complex, visitors or neighbors know your dumpster. I would ask around those neighbors that are always outside or nossy if they seen anything.
I would suspect your roommate. I would suspect your adjacent neighbors and also any know delinquents. And someone that is just plain dumb because that is such a dumb move. Let go of your anger and put your feet in their shoes, walk the path from your apt to the trash.

And talk to the post man and ask him if he delivered it on your door and not a neighbors.
Knock on all neighbors door. Watch your roommate like a hawk.

WoW. You called the police. I'd be way to embarrassed to involve the law on a good Samaritan for picking up someones unwanted trash...

I think Ronnie is onto something. The boxes in the dumpster are a bit odd. Your average porch pirate is gonna grab the loot and get the heck outta Dodge as quickly as possible. They aren't gonna hang around the scene to unbox these bulky heavy items and place them in a proper garbage receptacle.

Now what wrong with prevention? Does the whole world need to cater to people for not being smart. Apparently you think so...

**** like that happens in apartment complex..

Look it not a perfect world out there. But im NOT going to feel sorry to anybody that could have prevented it.

His case he knew he was not going to home. Call UPS to hold package...
