So I bought a nice pair of reworked and lightly ported iron 350 heads from a forum member fresh from the machine shop with new 11/32" valves, springs, the works. I paid $1500 shipped. UPS dropped them off (for some reason without a signature) on Tuesday the 14th. I tracked them from work and stupidly assumed that since they were marked delivered, they had actually knocked on the door and gave them to my roommate. Maybe the driver didn't want to carry them up the stairs? Unfortunately because of work I wasn't able to come by my apartment until yesterday, when I discovered the empty shipping box with all of the packing material laying out behind our apartment's trash area. So the thief must have opened the main huge box, saw the Edelbrock heads boxes that they were packed in, and decided that they would haul two 75lbs items off because they must be valuable. What are the chances that this person knew they were Buick 350 heads, or even what a cylinder head was? Now I'm out $1500 and have no heads for my engine. My heads are probably sitting in someone's shop or at the flee market (where I'm going today in hopes of finding them). Is the universe is telling me to sell my Skylark???
Damn man! Sorry to hear that. Theives are very high on my hate list. I have 4 cameras and a cellular security system watching my home. Hopefully that slows them down. I hope you get your heads back. Good Luck.
That sux! Don't assume that they will be scrapped (BTW: I hate scrapyard owners who will buy stuff that is obviously stolen almost worse then the thieves). Thieves are pretty good at finding out what they have. I would check with local pawn shops before I head to the scrapyards.
Thieves should be punished like child molesters and rapist,..finger nails ripped off and dipped in lacquer thinner,..then given a columbian neck tie
That sux, man! I hate thieves, but I hate scrapyard owners who purchase metal that is obviously stolen almost more then the thieves. In your case I would visit any local pawn shops. Don't assume that the lowlife that stole them won't figure out what he has. When I was in Massachusetts, there was a rash of copper drainpipes being stolen - mostly from churches - and sold as scrap. Even some of the bronze markers that are given to veterans were being swiped and sold as scrap. There is no way a scrapyard owner wouldn't know they were hot. There is a local scrap dealer who is honest and runs his yard(s) like a real business, is professional, and has made a ton of money. He pushed for a law which I believe was adopted in Lee County FL that requires a positive ID from anyone selling scrap to a yard, the sale must be logged by the scrapyard, and the ID is photocopied along with the check that the yard provides. The yard is forbidden to pay cash for any scrap unless the owner can provide proof of ownership. I think this is a great idea. Maybe a bit off-topic, but did I say that I hate thieves?
UPS only requires signature when optioned and paid for by the shipper. I think FedEx is the only one that stills required signature by default.
Sorry to hear about some scumbag stealing your head just shipped a set of aluminum heads with Fed ex on Friday insured for 1200 signature is required because of the value automatic signature required with FedEx I believe it's anything over $300 is signature required with Fed ex.
If the shipper didn't pay for signature required he's out of luck. Considering you found the box in the trash. Did the shipper ask you if you wanted it insured and signature required ? If so and it was supposed to have insurance and signature required When shipped and the shipper didn't pay for it it's on him.
I would have had them held at the UPS terminal for my pick up......i have done this several times when i had something coming and i was not or might not going to be home for the delivery. I feel your pain though...... Peace WildBill
