Excellent points and much appreciated. I definitely want the car to be streetable. 40mph will be the typical speed it sees with some highway mileage being faster but not an every outing occurrence. Definitely appreciate the insight and experience! I'll snap a picture of it this evening.
Pontiac 8.2" 10-bolt. Better than the Chevy 8.2". Clean it up,check everything over, and give it a try.
355 1968 rear Not a bad rear at all. It would be best to remove that posi and open it all up and check the posi unit for wear. Also clean the pinion casting snout it could be a Nodular housing (right where the leaf was in one of the pictures... get a wire wheel going on that...it will be a raise 'N' in the casting) Also check the axle tube code on the driver side REAR of the tube for a XH (stamped into the tube) that will all make the rear worth more money too if you did want to sell it to a GTO guy. Jim TIP - A-body rears are very easily interchanged in the 1964-1972 era... ALWAYS ID the rear before assuming it is a stock rear in the car. Same you time and money. Do not always trust a cover to ID the rear either. JD
Thanks for the tips! I haven't done anything with it yet. Probably going to wait till fall to start anything with it. My winter list keeps growing!
DUDE, 150.00 YOU stole that rear.... That is a Nodular GTO High performance rear end Probably has harden axles shafts too. Probably a super duty 4 pinion posi too. What a DEAL! Send that rear off to a blaster and get the whole thing rebearinged only thing I would be concerned as if the POSI unit was good. I can recondition it if it is. VERY COOL for you. See that Blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes they say.... Good things happen to good people - Have fun with your gift. Jim
Axle code will be on the driver side tube facing the back of the car. THIS is not a chevy rear it is Pontiac... Could have been in a 67 Oldsmobile too... then the code would be on the passenger tube facing back of car. Pontiac it will be XH or something like that
Yes I realize that now. The guy that I bought it from is a ford guy and just wanted rid of it. He just said it was a GM rear. Others were saying yep GM rear they're all the same. All of you enlightened me to something different. A little cleaning and wire wheeling later and there ya have it. I'm gonna keep looking for the axle code. Having trouble seeing it. If I remember the story correctly I'm gonna GUESS this is out of a GTO.
And yes I am definitely a blind squirrel. This stuff doesn't happen to me! LOL. People are already telling me to sell it. I think I'm gonna get it going again and put it underneath and run it for a while!
I have the same rearend but can't find the axle code on the drivers side shaft, does anyone have a picture of where it would be.thanks
If it's really pitted up it will be extremely hard to see. They're not stamped very good. I was able to find mine. I believe it was stamped ZH. I believe it sources to a 68 GTO
I would not worry about the axle code. YOU HAVE seen what you have and that all matches to a High performance Pontiac rear end. So BE happy and clean the inside with kerosene - drain it and refill and cross your fingers the posi is still good. IF not you will need to pull the posi and send it to us or a machine shop for machine work to make it come alive again. Jim
