On all the engines I have ever owned or worked on the # 1 cylinder was the front left (driver side) cylinder, However a book I have shows the # 1 cylinder and the front right (passenger side). When I hook my timing light to that wire the timing mark is so far off I cant get it close to the correct timing but when I put it on the left side I can dial the timing right on. Can someone confirm the correct # 1 location? It is a 1965 GS covertable 4-speed. Thanks
#1 cylinder is usually the cyl closest to the front of the engine. one valve cover is slightly farther forward than the other...that front cyl is #1. (usually)
It is the original 401 and if it is the right front (passenger side) then I can't get the timing close. Do you think I need to pull the distributor and move it? If so, which direction? Thanks for all your help.
Are you at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected? Check here for the order and cylinder designation. Cheryl
Re: 401 #1 Cylinder location Can a harmonic balancer be put on incorrectly? Is it possible that this is causing me not to be able to get the timing set?
Tell that to a South African, Australian or British Nailhead owner with a RHD conversion.....
The outer ring of the harmonic balancer has come un vulcanized and slipped around in the circle. Dont throw it away. remove it and it can be revulcanized. look in hemmings motor news and there are companies that do this. or find some one that has one to sell. When this happens you cant find the timing mark because it is no longer in the correct location on the balancer. While you have it off check it for a crack in the key way that is in the hub. If it is cracked there is no choice but to replace it.
