can anyone out there draw me a little wiring diagram to wire up a rover electronic distributor for my 215 ? I have a red wire and a blue wire coming out of the thing, Thanks !

Where did you get the distributor? You might be missing the module or amplifier. Hard to say.

I took it out of a rover in a junkyard. When you say amplifier, are you referring to another unit outside of the distributor ? I just have the distributor and coil, and I want to put it on my 215 Buick.

While I was researching Rover distributors, they mention an amplifier or external module. I don't think 2 wires is enough.

Some Rover distributors used the GM 4 pin HEI. That sounds like what you have. It would have 2 wires from the distributor.

Yes, I was told that it was HEI, there’s a blue wire and a red wire, where do they go ?

Bruce, If you look at the 4 pin HEI module. W and G on the left side go to the distributor. They are opposite polarity. With the MSD both wires are black and I try both ways and the one that retards the timing is the correct way. I've been looking for a color code diagram and haven't found one yet. I use external HEI for a Ford Duraspark distributor. Use heat sink paste under the module. I'll attach that link.

You do know the drive end of the Rover is opposite from the Buick and you need the Rover oil pump drive gear for it to work.

3B3D86AC-D8B1-4E40-B9E3-5CF2ABAE9D8B.jpeg I’m gonna try to post pictures, the gear end of the two are the same, I just need to add the pin to drive the oil pump, the Rover unit is already drilled for it. It’s a vacuum advance distributor.

    Bruce, Should work fine then.

Thanks for that diagram Jim, that looks simple. I don’t think the distributor is polarity sensitive, since, as you can see, there’s just an electro magnet in there. Anyway, it seems like I need to add a module to the system, what kind of box would you mount it in ?, and where ?

No need for a box, all you need is a plate to act as a heat sink. Dave Ray (The Ignition Man ) had his small body HEI distributors. He would mount the module to the bottom of the distributor, but also had it separate on a metal plate mounted to the firewall.

https://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/gallery Look through his pictures, just don't go to the bottom.:)

Yes, I have the msd coil, and also assorted hei coils. I know there are some new modules at work, I’m gonna grab one tomorrow, I’ll mount the distributor in my lathe , wire it up and test it, should be fun !

75-80 GM 4 pin HEI module.

Polarity to the reluctor determines if spark occurs at leading edge or trailing edge. If two black wires, the way to determine is more retarded timing and more stable is correct. Ford orange is + and violet is - . British and European standard color code red is + and blue is - . Red to W and blue to G is correct. Another good idea is to add a relay between module and ignition switch.
