Any guys running them and have the relay crap out on you? I've got a Hella UP28 pump, vacuum switch, relay, and brake pedal switch to activate the pump every time its pressed. The vacuum switch cuts the pump off at 17". Yesterday had a relay failure. Carry 2 spares with me now but doesn't help when your relay craps out and you have no pwr assist. I have a Moroso and it has worked great for the last four years (knock on wood). My switch assembly looks to be the same as yours. When I first installed it, the pump would only run for a few seconds and then shut off and I had no power assist. It turned out that the T wasn't drilled out. After I drilled it out, it's been fine. I didn't use the cheap generic looking relay that came with the pump. I used a GM relay like all of my other relays and I do carry a couple of spare relays just in case.
I was even thinking about a tee with a one way check valve to tap into the measely 5" of vacuum I get with my cam, just in case. When that electric pump stops, you have no assist at all. How are all the new cars/ trucks so reliable?
I thought about doing that also, maybe this winter, tapping into my 10" of vacuum. The new trucks aren't reliable. One of the guys at work is on his 3rd $500+ pump on his 2015 F-150.
Use the pump in conjunction with a vacuum cannister. My engine makes borderline vacuum for power brakes, so I installed a cannister, leaving room for a pump if needed when I move to a bigger cam. It usually holds 25psi , stored from accumulated engine vacuum. Seems to be working great for now. Jim
Might be a good safety margin. Wanted to keep things compact and sleek. When the relay or pump fails, that canister would probably only give me a couple stops at best.
I use a CVR Vacuum pump along with a vacuum canister. The pump kicks in and out when required to maintain 12-17" vacuum
It has been pretty reliable as well. I have replaced the vacuum switch once but think it may have had a bit of grit in it. So I cleaned it and stored it away in case I need it
I have the CVR pump along with a canister on an 84 Bird - I find them very noisy. Another option that I have used is a vac pump from a 1999 -2010 Ford F-350 for dash ac door actuators. It holds 14 #s, self actuated and is easy to install. It is my choice. Price is from $69. - $89.00. Dorman #904-214 - Hope this helps - byron
This Hella UP28, made in Germany, is pretty quiet. That's the main reason for choosing it, and the no China manufacturing. They are used on BMW, Audis, Volkswagons, and others.
I just watched the MPB video. Seems as loud if not louder than my Hella UP28. Looks better than their original model, pricey at $599
