Wondering if anyone ever created an accurate cut file for the side and rear spoiler stripes. Been trying to recreate one from dimensions found in different posts over the years. Not coming out the greatest. Does anyone know if they exist? Thanks

    Why not buy the stencils?

    I thought they were wrong.

The phoenix graphix ones I used were really off. I should have just thrown them away and done it using the measurements I have (now).

I have heard very mixed results would rather do it in vinyl and be able to take it off.

So what is the most accurate available stensil kit?

From what people have said on this site, none of them are correct.

Like Adam said, you should use either the measurements in Dove’s book, which were taken off original cars, or the measurements from the assembly manuals.

Performance Graphics has a vinyl decal kit which I'm guessing is computer generated

I remember someone here talking about a paper stencil kit that was computer generated. From what I remember the computer drew the curves in by using “arcs” to create the design.

The original paper stencils were not done that way, so how could a computer get everything right.

    PS.
I have no idea how the vinyl kit was created.

Then and Now had done a lot of cars some with original paint and I remember Mark Reeves talking about how different the location was on each car. You could see that this year at the anniversary with the original cars. There was also an article published with all the dimension back in the 1990s. I think there are posts that reference the article.

I am not aware of anyone creating and selling a set from an original car.

    Mark,
Once we took measurements off an original paint 70 Yellow GSX and the placement of the stripes were off by 3/4 of an inch between the two sides. It looked like when the paper stencil kits were installed at the factory the one side was too low, so the other side ended up too high.

Mark Reeves painted my 71 GSX and he used measurements off an original car. I also made him put in the staggers in the stripes over the rear wheelhouses. You should have heard him bitch about that. They had the car all masked and ready to stripe and he didn’t want to change it. Eventually he ended up cutting the stencil tape at the top of the rear wheel wells and re-taping the stripes to the end of the rear quarters. This basically reproduced the look of where the factory paper stencils overlapped, so I got the look I was after.

I have all the part numbers for the factory stencils. They were a no cost item for the GSX’s as they were “used up” during production. Maybe I should run the numbers and see if any are left in the GM parts inventories. My gut feeling is they were only available at the factory level and never made it into the parts databases.
