I need a new windshield, and when the old one came out there was a spot of rust on the windshield frame. I am having that fixed, but they need to damage the vinyl on the top frame piece. The body shop tells me that piece was painted, not vinyl from the factory. Does anyone know if this is correct, and if so what color would it be?
Note: To replace that the inner upper metal covers, mirror bracket, corner pieces, visor mounts, and pillar channels will need to re removed. Not a small job.
The grain of the vinyl was called "Madrid" grain. Any upholstery shop should have that. If you want to know what color it is then you need to tell us what color interior you have. Duane
If you don't want to hit an upholstery shop the Parts Place and Year One peddle a piece: https://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/pr...onvertible-top-header-vinyl-strip-black/69492 The aft side of the header has a substaintial grain looking metal piece located on each side which is painted. We painted the header to insure it wouldn't rust again before installing the vinyl on my '69.
You just need to make sure the vender you are buying the vinyl from knows that it is the correct grain. Otherwise you need to go all through this again to replace it. Duane
Thanks for all the help. I wasn't at the car when the question about paint was asked. The windshield is now installed, and I have the car. It is pretty clear the vinyl was factory. But the grain and other information is helpful. I am taking a break for the holidays to just drive and enjoy the car. Then I will start the vinyl replacement. Painting the header is a good idea, but that is not where the rust was. Still a good precaution while it is all exposed.
I am back at the vinyl repair, and have a shop that can do the work. I am missing a couple of the clips that hold the trim piece across the top. The shop does not have any of the correct clips, so I need to source some new ones. Any ideas where I can find them? Thanks for all the help and Happy New Year.
I don't know where to source them but - all 68-72 convertibles across the GM A-body line share front windshield moldings/parts so perhaps a look at what is available for a chevelle or GTO may be an easier find.
Thought I would let all know that I have the new vinyl in place, and the trim pieces back in place. Now on to other issues, but I am getting toward the end. Thanks for the help.
