Is it possible (of course everything is, but within reason!) to remove the passenger exhaust manifold on a 70 gs 455 with AC in the car? What the best way to do it? Thanks to whoever put the motor together the car has a gasket on the manifold and it has blown out at the rear. - Bill
Should come right out. You will probably have to raise the right side off the mount though to gain clearance.
You can probably do it but sometimes the long way is the easiest way. I would pull the compressor out of the way. Bob H.
Yep and yep,,,,, and like Bob said , sometimes the longer, harder way is the easiest.... What really counts is what you do once you get it off.... You might file the head/manifold surface straight again, port match it to the head, buff up the manifold bolts and then put it back without any gaskets .... the factory did not use them,,,, and be sure to use anti-seize compound on the bolts when you put them back..... and naturally sandblast and paint the manifolds,, before you put them back.....
Just a follow-up - lets see I got it off in October..6 months later and its back on. It actually was easy to get in and out - slide it down and back past the exhaust pipe. Reverse to get it back in. And one more tip - put the long bolt in first. It won't go in past the frame if the manifold is bolted in place. How did I know that? Also, I found a 1/4" drive torque wrench that fits on the bottom middle and long bolts.
Funny you should follow up on this today. I noticed the right side manifold was leaking on the beater last week. And it has AC too. I wound up doing the job this past Saturday. Took me about an hour start to finish. Although I had them off in 2017 and installed stainless bolts at the time so everything came apart no problem. Used a header gasket instead of the FelPro manifold gaskets. I also cheated and used my Snap On electric ratchet.
Go with REMFLEX gaskets... Im sold on them. Take a "MILL BASTARD" file and rub the head clean, and the same on the manifold. ALWAYS start with the long bolt LOL! ws
